“I imagine my family found out about my engagement ending.”

“How? Did Knox call them?”

“Doubtful,” I replied. “Knox doesn’t like anyone knowing about his dirty laundry.”

My phone buzzed with another incoming text from my middle brother Chase.

Chase

The wedding hall called Dad to confirm the refund and cancellation of your wedding.

“Shit,” I muttered. “Cat’s out of the bag.”

“That was fast,” Smoke said.

“The wedding hall called my father. Since he was the one paying for the wedding.”

“You mean your father—who doesn’t like your ex—was still going to pay for your wedding?”

“Yeah.”

He clamped his mouth shut.

“What?” I demanded. “What are you not saying?”

“That’s unconditional love right there,” he said.

“Yeah, I know that! Why do you think I feel so guilty not telling them right away?”

Smoke put on the turn signal and slid into the exit lane.

“Where are we going?” I asked. “We don’t need gas.”

“You need to talk to your family,” he said. “You’ll feel better. They’ll feel better.”

“It’ll make it real,” I blurted out. “Telling my family my engagement is over means it’s really over.”

“Cupcake, your engagement was really over the moment you were in my bed.”

My cheeks blazed. “You weren’t ever supposed to bring that up again.”

“I don’t remember that being one of the rules.”

“One night, one night only, remember?”

“It was two nights—and we never said anything about not talking about it.”

“I think we’re remembering the past differently.”

Smoke pulled into a gas station parking lot and parked the truck. He left the engine running and unbuckled his seatbelt. “I’m getting a breakfast sandwich. You want anything?”

I shook my head.

“Hey,” he said, reaching across the seat and touching my thigh. “It’ll be okay. You did the hard part already. Your family loves you. They just want to make sure you’re okay.”

He squeezed my thigh before letting go. Then he climbed out of the truck, giving me privacy.

It wasn’t going to get any easier. Dodging their calls and texts would only make it worse.
