“If you want,” I allowed.

She let out a sigh. “I wasn’t mad about you and my dad getting together.” Tavy made a face. “That sounds so weird to say.”

“I know. It’s still kind of a shock to me, too. You weren’t mad about us getting together? Really?”

She shook her head. “Not when I calmed down enough to really figure out the heart of the problem. It was…well, I felt betrayed because it was a secret. You lied to me.”

“We didn’t mean for it to be a secret. But we didn’t want to tell you if it wasn’t going to be anything. Neither of us wanted to jeopardize our relationship with you for a fling that would’ve run its course.”

“Yeah.” Her brow furrowed. “When I came to see my dad yesterday—” She looked at me.

“He just told me about you sneaking a visit in.” I tried not to let hurt permeate my voice, but I didn’t do a good enough job.

She winced. “I wasn’t ready to see you. And then you left that angry voicemail.”

“Sorry about that.”

“No, you’re not.” She grinned.

“No, I’m not,” I agreed with a laugh. “Continue though.”

“My concern was about you. You had just gotten out of an engagement. And Dad is like, a lot older.”

“You didn’t really think he’d take advantage of me, did you?”

She shook her head. “No. Not really. I was just…thrown. And confused. And out of the loop. I don’t like being out of the loop.”

“I know. Tavy?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m his Old Lady now.”

She nodded. “Oh, wow…”

I bit my lip.

“There’s more?” she asked.

“There’s more.”

“Well, spit it out.”

“He said he’s going to ask me to marry him. And I said when he does, I’ll say yes.”

She didn’t say anything for a moment and then finally she asked, “Where’s the ring?”

I blinked. “Well, he hasn’t actually asked me yet. He just said that he would ask.”

“So, you’re not officially engaged?”

“Not technically.”

“I’m going to ask you a question and you’re going to be completely transparent with me. Okay?”

I nodded.

“This is not me being a brat or trying to sabotage anything. I see how he looks at you. I can’t believe I missed it.” She rolled her eyes. “We can scratch detective off the list of potential jobs in case the nursing thing doesn’t work out.”
