“No. You’ve dated every guy you’ve ever wanted.”

“Hmm. Not really true. I wasn’t sure I was into Knox. It was more like Knox told me I was into him and I let myself get swept away by his attention.”

“Too bad a controlling narcissist lurked beneath the facade of his good looks.”

“Well, it was a shit lesson,” I admitted. “But I got out. And thankfully, he never gave me anything that required antibiotics.”

She raised her glass. “I’ll toast to that.”

“I’m so full I can hardly move,” Tavy said. “And yet I still want to take an extra tiramisu to go.”

“I won’t say no.”

“I’m not ready to go home, but I don’t want to go to a bar,” Tavy said. “Wanna hang out?”

“Sure,” I said with a smile. “My place or yours?”

“Yours. I have neighbors who fight and then have loud makeup sex.”

Mrs. Leonardi swept by our table, clearing the last of our dishes. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d eaten so well. Middle of the night grilled cheeses with Smoke crossed my mind, but that was different.

“What’s got you grinning?” Tavy asked.

“Hmm? Oh, nothing,” I lied. “Let’s get some dessert to go and head to my place.”

“I need to use the restroom real fast.”

While I was alone at the table, I shot off a quick text to Smoke.

Me

Tavy’s coming over to my apartment for a bit. I’ll text you when she goes home.

He didn’t reply right away and I shoved my phone into my purse as Tavy came back to the table.

“Everything good?” she asked.

“Yep.”

Mama Leonardi brought us desserts to-go and our check. We paid and exited the restaurant.

“I think she said to come back,” Tavy said. “But I’m not entirely sure.”

“I’ll be back. The food was unbelievable. See you at my place,” I said.

Tavy made it there before I did, and by the time I was climbing out of my car in the parking lot of the bakery Tavy was bouncing up and down.

“I have to pee,” she said.

“You just went,” I said with a laugh.

“I broke the seal. Doesn’t matter that I only had one glass of wine. My bladder is full.”

“Okay, okay, let’s go.”

We hurried to the back door of the building and I quickly unlocked it. I gave her my keys and then turned off the alarm. I would set it again after Smoke came over. I’d given him the code so he could arm it when he left in the morning, which I appreciated because it meant I got to remain asleep. He really did have the short end of the stick, having to get up when it was still dark and ride his motorcycle back to the clubhouse just so no one would find out about us.
