“Hmm. I think ragey-Logan just came out to play,” Smoke said.

“Ragey, stabby Logan.”

He fell silent, almost like he was giving me the space to talk if I wanted to. And suddenly I wanted to. I’d spoken a little bit about it to Tavy last night, but we’d quickly gotten drunk and feelings don’t get sorted when you’re drunk. It was almost like the liquor froze the emotion in your body so there was no way to actually process it.

“I drove him to the airport yesterday,” I said suddenly. “I dropped him off at curbside check-in. I was a few minutes away when I realized he’d left his carry-on bag of comfort stuff. Neck pillow. Noise cancelling headphones. Things that make the flight bearable. So, I circled back around through airport traffic so I could give him his bag and make sure he was comfortable on the flight… He was standing next to the porter and I thought he was waiting for me. Nope, not me. A redhead walked up to him and I watched him pull her to him, grab her ass, and kiss her. Like, with tongue and everything.”

“Fuck,” Smoke said softly.

“Yeah. She works in his firm. I’ve met her actually. At the company Christmas party.” I glanced at him. “I never thought I’d be a walking cliché.”

“And last night, you…”

“Had dinner with Tavy. We got really drunk and then on our way to another bar, I…”

“You…”

I sighed. “What the hell, might as well tell you the entire truth. I had to pee, okay? I had to pee, and I thought it would be a good idea to squat in an alley. It just so happened that a cop car was slowly driving by and saw what was happening.”

“And he took you and Tavy to jail for that?”

“No. You get a ticket and a fine for public urination.” I shook my head. “The cop got out of the car and was planning on ticketing me, but I had to open my drunk mouth and start yelling at him and blaming the only man in front of me for all of Knox’s transgressions.”

“And that’s why he took you and Tavy to jail?”

“Oh no, it gets better. I think he was going to let us off with a warning, actually. But then I puked on his shoes.” I winced. “And so he took us to jail for our own protection. His words, not mine. I think he has a daughter so he had a soft spot for me and realized we were going to get in real trouble if left to our own devices.”

Smoke laughed and shook his head. “What a night you guys had.”

“Thanks for coming to get us.”

He looked at me. “You’ve already thanked me.”

Our gazes locked and something moved in my chest. I suddenly couldn’t breathe.

Again.

Thankfully, Smoke turned his attention back to the road.

“Your hot streak,” I blurted out, wanting to cover the strange moment between us.

“What about it?”

“You went back to the casino. Were you still on a hot streak?”

“Enough to pay for the gas,” Smoke said with a wry grin.

“That worked out well then.”

He looked at me again and then paused for just a moment before he said, “Yeah. I think it did.”

Chapter 4

With the phone to my ear, I adjusted the air conditioning in the moving truck.

“Don’t tell my dad but flying for a few hours versus being on the road for two days is the way to do it,” Tavy said.

“I won’t tell him,” I assured her. “But I think you owe him a father-daughter hang out.”
