“Tell you what,” I said. “I’ll buy the pants, but only if we stop talking about me, and find Brielle a way to get laid.”

“Can we do it over margaritas?” Brielle asked.

“And nachos,” Jazz added.

My phone chimed in my purse. “I’ll be out in a second.” I stepped back into the dressing room and pulled the curtain closed. Before I changed out of the leather pants, I checked my cell.

Edith had sent a photo with her new granddaughter decked out in a pair of booties she’d knitted. I fired off a quick response. Her reply was just as fast.

Edith

When do I get to knit booties for you and Smoke?

“Fuck.”

“Everything okay?” Jazz called.

“Oh, yeah, fine.”

I shoved my phone back into my purse and quickly changed. I held up the leather pants. I was no longer in a relationship with Knox. I didn’t have to let him dictate what I wore.

But how was I going to stop hearing him in my head?

I’ll drown him out with new friends, a new apartment, and a new life.

And hopefully, in time, his voice—and all the pain he’d caused me—would fade.

“Okay, the hostess knows you by name,” I said once we were seated in the booth.

“We come here at least once a week,” Jazz explained. “Twice if it’s been a rough week.”

“And it’s been a rough week,” Brielle explained. “Pitcher of margs?”

“Yep.” Jazz nodded.

I shook my head and reached for a menu. “None for me, thanks.”

“You’re not like, on a cleanse, are you?” Jazz asked.

“Because that would be totally okay,” Brielle voiced.

“No.” I laughed. “No cleanse. Just…the last time I drank hard liquor, Tavy and I got arrested and her dad had to bail us out of jail. Besides, I don’t feel like another hangover.”

“Arrested?” Jazz raised her brows. “For what?”

I told them the story.

“We need to meet this Tavy character,” Jazz said.

“She is a character,” I assured them. “And my best friend since college. She’s my I know your every secret and I can predict your next move kind of best friend.”

Not all my secrets…

“We’re that way,” Jazz said, gesturing to Brielle. “Friends since high school. I’m like part of their family. Guac?”

I nodded.
