“Well, don’t let her do anything stupid.”

Easier said than done. “I’ll do my best.”

“A pizza?” Dasha managed to look equal parts offended and scornful. “Why would I want to order a pizza?”

“Uh, so we don’t have to cook?”

“I’m not here to cook or eat pizza; I’m here to work.”

“But it’s seven p.m.”

“Precisely. No self-respecting investigator would be eating fast food at seven thirty.”

“Is it the time you’re taking issue with? Or my choice of menu?”

“Both. Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”

“Because we’re in Emmy’s apartment and it’s really fancy?”

“You should always wear shoes; you never know when you’ll have to run. We’ll leave in five minutes. Where do I find the building schematics for Belgravia Place?”

“The what?”

“The architectural drawings? The blueprints?” She stared expectantly. “You don’t have them?”

“Why…why would I need them?”

“To work out possible methods of ingress and egress? What, you plan to sit around outside with your thumb up your ass?”

“Collier already tried to get in. There’s a concierge and a security guard in the lobby.”

“What did he do, try to get past with good looks and charm?”

“No, he had a package.”

Dasha rolled her eyes. “How original.”

Today, she was a brunette, a businesswoman dressed in a pantsuit and sensible shoes. I hadn’t even recognised her when I passed her in the lobby downstairs. Only when I was waiting for the elevator to Emmy and Black’s penthouse did I hear the soft voice behind me, the accent pure New York.

“Boom. You’re dead. You need to learn to watch your back, Hallie Chastain.”

She’d contoured her face with make-up, making it appear thinner, and her eyes were brown rather than blue. And unless I was mistaken, she’d added padding around her hips and chest because she wasn’t normally that curvy.

“So what would you have done?”

“I’ll know the answer to that after I’ve assessed the building, its occupants, and the surroundings.”

“We could just wait until Thursday. Daisy de Ville has a show at the Starlight Lounge, and she’ll have to leave the building then.”

“Thursday? You want to waste six whole days?”

“I mean, we might see her sooner.”

“Why aren’t you wearing appropriate footwear yet?”

This was going to be a long, long night.
