“Boss, Anya and Ryan are coming your way.”

My fingers froze over the enter button, my breath held like I was trapped in a vise. “Why?” I barked with the last of the air in my lungs.

“Samara was taken.”

* * *

My world narrowed to the moment I first saw my sister. A picture of her swaddled in a pink blanket, a tuft of black hair sticking out, her blue eyes sparkling like diamonds as her lips lifted in a smile.

Beautiful.

Innocent.

Someone who might want me, whom I could protect and maybe figure out how to turn on my heart for so I could care for them.

My memory of that time was so old, it didn’t seem real. But there had been something that day. A jolt in my chest. An overflowing of affection. There one moment, gone the next. A stolen second where my life wasn’t so cold and empty.

And then Daria ripped the picture she’d given me from my hands. The sensation in my chest, gone. Numb once more.

Thoughts of Samara raced through my head as I struggled to breathe. No, she couldn’t be gone. My heart worked now. Abi had flipped the on switch. I could finally love my sister.

“MC trouble,” Walter was explaining. “Jack Hannigan’s woman and Samara look similar enough to be related. Clint Morgan was after the other girl. Samara was collateral. They found her. She’s alive. Vitucci’s jet is in the air.”

The world came back into focus as oxygen refilled my lungs.

She was alive.

“Not Daria?” I choked out and quickly cleared my throat. “It wasn’t them, you’re sure?”

“No, boss. Like I said. She and the other girl were taken by Clint Morgan. MC has been having issues with him. Both are alive.”

“How did they find her?” My brain struggled to play catch-up.

“From what I heard, a GPS chip was put in Samara’s arm a while back. They were able to find her location using that. She’s on her way to the hospital now.”

“She was hurt?”

How? My baby sister was indestructible. At least, that was how it always seemed. She was the strong one. The fighter. The one who always found a way to come out on top. Yes, she was batshit crazy, but she was mine. She’d led me to Abi. She was my sweet girl’s friend.

I stabbed my fingers through my hair, trying to figure out a new plan while a torrent of emotions exploded inside me like bombs.

“Severe concussion from the airbags when Morgan’s guy ambushed her.”

“Fuck.” Inhaling slowly, I fought for the calm I needed. “I need you on alert. Daria was waiting for a way in. Samara being vulnerable like this will give it to her. You keep my father safe, Walter. I’ll be there tomorrow.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

abi

Licking pizza sauce off my thumb, I considered watching another episode of my favorite K-drama, but it was late and I needed a shower. I’d skipped my classes as well as my run, and for the first time in years, I’d done absolutely nothing.

Even while working, Vaughn spoiled me. Coffee and chocolate-filled goodness for breakfast. Sweet texts all day to let me know he missed me. Having my favorite pizza delivered.

Wishing he were with me, I picked up my phone, about to ask when or even if he was coming back, when my door opened. Seeing his pale face and wild eyes, I dropped the device back onto the wireless charger and rushed to him.

His head fell forward when I grasped his face. “I need you to come with me,” he choked out, pressing his forehead to mine. “My sister was in an accident this evening. I have to get to her.”

Feeling his body tremble, I hugged him. “Oh my God. Of course I’m going to come with you. Is she going to be okay?”
