“Oh, you’re local, then.”

“Yeah. I work in the Financial District. Do you work here at the club?”

She smiled. “Not officially, but I do the accounting because numbers make Shane grumpy, and I’m a CPA who enjoys them.”

Interesting. I had other questions about what it was like to be with someone who owned a sex club, but we’d arrived at Max’s SUV, and it wasn’t any of my business. I opened the rear hatch and took out my suitcase, trying not to get depressed over the sight of his duffle bag. I also grabbed my purse and checked around to ensure I didn’t leave anything behind.

“You sure you don’t want to say goodbye to Max?” Daniella asked.

I gave her a sad smile. “No, we promised it was only for the weekend, and it’s very clear that’s all he wanted. Um, an NDA was mentioned, so if he needs me to sign something, maybe he could email it.”

The sympathy in her eyes was obvious. “Of course. I’ll let him know.”

“Thanks, Daniella. It was nice to meet you.”

“You too.”

It occurred to me I could’ve asked to go back into the club so I could change clothes, but as I got into the backseat of the Uber still wearing my red bridesmaid dress, it felt like a fitting ending to the weekend.

Chapter Twenty-One

Max

My arms reached for Oakley, wanting her warmth curled around me as a way to start the morning, but I found nothing but cool sheets. I sat up and looked around the room. Shit, she couldn’t be gone. I had her stuff in my truck. But upon looking at the nightstand, I didn’t see my car fob.

I dressed quickly in my trousers, not bothering with a shirt before opening the door. Shane was there at his desk drinking coffee.

“Where’s Oakley?”

He looked up. “She went home. Dani took her to your car to get her stuff. Here’s your key.”

Crap. She’d left. As agreed, we’d spent the weekend together, and now it was over. I wondered if she regretted last night. If she was ashamed of what we’d done in the room for others to see. Or if she’d simply decided the weekend was all she wanted from me. Or perhaps all of the above.

“Did she say anything?”

He quirked a brow. “Like what?”

“I don’t know.” I dug the heels of my hands into my eye sockets, my brain not yet firing on all four cylinders.

My best friend and business partner stared at me in surprise. “You like this girl, don’t you?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“But earlier you said—”

“I know what I said. I just wasn’t ready to talk about it. I still haven’t figured out how it would work.”

“How what would work?” came Daniella’s voice as she stepped off the elevator.

I immediately peppered her with questions. “How was Oakley? I mean how did she seem? Did she say anything? Leave a phone number or something?” Jesus, what was I—in high school?

She shared a look with her husband before taking a seat beside him. “She seemed a little sad to be leaving, in my opinion. She said you had a rough time at the wedding, and it’s one of the reasons you returned early?”

“Yeah. But given my father, no surprise. But back to Oakley, did she say anything else?” Something to give me hope?

Dani smiled. “You really like this girl, don’t you?”

“Yes.” And the fact they were both enjoying it while I was clearly miserable was annoying. Why had she left?
