Aw hell. Who cares.

I let go because how can anyone contain himself in the presence of a goddess?

“Are you okay?” my bride whispers, smiling up at me hopefully as she squeezes my arm.

“The gods smiled on me when they sent you my way, Stasi.”

She breathes with intention, steadying herself. Her grip on my arm tightens.

“What about you? Are you well?”

I can’t help but notice the slight wince. There’s something she’s not telling me.

“I’m wonderful. I’m marrying my king today.”

“You’re everything I didn’t know I needed, Stasi.”

A few feet away, the celebrant jokes, “Save it for the vows, you two.”

Everyone laughs, and when I turn to the celebrant to offer some lighthearted retort, I see my sister’s face.

“Flora?” I ask.

Callum’s eyes snap to my sister, but she’s gaping at Jakob.

“It’s you,” she rasps.

Callum’s eyes flash with rare anger. “What is it, Flora?”

My sister doesn’t answer. Jakob has a look of resignation.

“It is,” is all he says.

Callum growls, “Flora, what is going on?”

She points at Jakob. “It was him. He caught me when I fell.”

“Him?!” Torben shouts. All eyes turn to Jakob, but I’m watching Flora like a hawk because her eyes begin to flutter. She sways on her feet.

I shout, and Etienne catches her as she goes down.

Torben lunges forward to help. I don’t go anywhere because Stasi’s grip on my arm tightens.

My bride squeaks, “Oh gods!”

I turn toward her and see her holding her stomach and wincing.

“Stasi!”

Her eyes widen. “I’m sorry, but I think I just ruined everything.”

I follow her gaze to the puddle of clear liquid at her feet, making mud on the forest floor.

Tunnel vision closes in as I scoop her up in my arms.

“The wedding is postponed, everyone!” I shout. “My wife is having a baby.”

The cacophony around us doesn’t affect me one bit. All I know is I have to get my wife to the hospital.
