She snorts. “I’m a mess.”

Pressing a kiss to her cool forehead, I admire the way her skin glows in the early morning light. “You make that look good.”

She laughs, and I help her remove foliage from her hair.

“Let’s go inside. You want to shower while I cook breakfast?”

“Nah. Let’s do it together.”

She stares at me with a small, hesitant smile. “What is it?”

“Never showered with anyone before,” she says shyly.

“If you don’t want to…” I start.

“No, let’s do it. Just showering though. No shenanigans. I’m feeling a little…sore?” Jo blushes when she says this, and I press a kiss to her nose.

“It’s normal.”

“Okay. Well, maybe later I’ll feel ready to read that romance novel with you and we can try some new scenarios.”

I throw my head back and bark a laugh, squeezing her close. Her sweet curves are warm against me, and if I wasn’t so cramped up from lying flat on my back on the deck all night, I’d be happy to lie here with her forever. “My little princess is already wanting to try new positions.”

She shrugs. “What can I say? You woke up something in me.”

“You’re going to wear me out.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“Nothing could make me happier.”

And that’s the gods’ honest truth.

“I’m sorry; I didn’t hear you.”

Jakob asked me a question, but I could not hear it over the sound of the shower running.

We are standing in the bathroom, still wrapped in our shared blanket, shivering and giggling as we wait for the water to warm up.

“I asked you to marry me,” Jakob says, a little louder.

I have to take several beats to make sure I heard what I heard.

“Now?”

“Today.”

“You want to honor our childhood pact … today?”

“Yes, Jo. Marry me. Today.”

“Can we even get married today?”

“The king changed the waiting period when he decided his children all needed to settle down and get married. So we can apply for our marriage license and get married on the same day. If we want to.”
