She smiled, and everything was right in the world. “I am so proud of you, Veronica. We all are.”

“Who are you?” I asked, hardly able to breathe as I stared up at a deity. There was no other explanation. “Who’s we?”

Thane’s hand slipped into mine and squeezed.

“Who I am depends on several factors, as I am the mother goddess of all living creatures.” She clasped her hands in front of her. “You know me as Mokosh, while our brave witch over there calls me Diana. Dazhbog, Ognebog, and many others send their blessings and heartfelt thanks. To all of you.”

A goddess was thanking me? Was this a dream?

Had I died?

I blinked. “How are you here? Why? What’s going on?”

Mokosh laughed, the contagious sound brightening my soul. “Dazhbog was right—you do ask many questions.” Heat rose in my cheeks, but she shook her head softly. “Never stop, my darling. Questions produce knowledge, and knowledge is the greatest weapon of all. The answer to all your questions is simple: I am worshipped in every realm. Therefore, I may go wherever I wish.

“As a token of my gratitude for what you have accomplished here today, I bestowed the gift of a phoenix lifetime upon your mate. Your one true mate and a union blessed by the gods.” She winked as if sharing a joke among friends.

Pressing a hand to my lips, I laughed. Or maybe I sobbed. I didn’t even know anymore, but I threw myself at Thane, knocking him flat on the floor again, and kissed him hard.

After a moment of surprise, he wrapped his arms around me, holding me close as he kissed me back. As our tongues met in a familiar dance, I felt whole again. Heat swirled around us, and love pulsed between our renewed soul link.

Something else pulsed against me, too.

Thane groaned and broke the kiss. His deep blue gaze searched mine, ravenous with desire. “Let’s finish this moment later, or everyone here will become a voyeur, including a goddess.”

I laughed and kissed him again without a care in the world.

Adam cleared his throat. “Many thanks to you and the others, Mother Mokosh.”

Somehow finding the strength to extract my limbs from Thane’s, I stood and helped him to his feet while eyeing his sizable erection in appreciation.

Shooting me an exasperated look, he spun me around by the shoulders. He held my body in front of his and wrapped his arms around me.

His goal was probably to hide his obvious state of arousal, but all he did was rub it against my butt, which only made him—and me—pulse harder.

Grinning, I met Mokosh’s sparkling gaze. “I don’t know what to say except thank you, sincerely. From the bottom of my no-longer-shattered heart.”

She lowered her chin in acknowledgment, then looked at Angela. “Come here, my child.”

The witch thought she’d seen it all when she met Imos and Tundreg. Now she could add meeting a goddess to her list of firsts, a feat most Community members could only dream about.

Angela’s thick curls were grey from soot, her black beanie nowhere in sight, and so much dried blood and ash covered her skin that she was almost unrecognizable. Dropping her gaze, she gulped as she approached.

Mokosh placed her hand beneath Angela’s chin and lifted it until the witch looked at her. “A blessing upon you as well, dear one. May you enjoy several centuries of love and laughter with your Katherine.”

My mouth dropped open, and I gripped Thane’s arms.

Angela’s face crumpled as she burst into tears. She threw her arms around Mokosh and hugged her tight.

The goddess let out a surprised laugh and returned the embrace.

I tilted my head to smile at Thane. The nightmare was over, and we could finally go home.

He pressed his lips against mine, but even that soft touch was enough to ignite a passion so deep, I thought I’d combust on the spot. I pulled away to thank Mokosh once again for her gift.

Except when I looked back, the goddess was gone.
