“What the fuck have you done to her? Calling you Daddy? That’s disgusting!”

Soren’s sharp inhale tells me everything I need to know.

Cupping her jaw, I tilt her head so I can see her tear-filled eyes. “Sweet girl, go on inside. Sally’s in the kitchen cooking something delicious, and she’s looking forward to spending time with you.” Her head nods, but that’s not enough for me. Meeting Chambers’ stare, I demand from Soren, “Give Daddy a kiss.” She hesitates, and her cheeks flush, pissing me off further, but I wait for her to make the choice on her own.

“Yes, Daddy.” Something solidifies in her spine as she raises to meet my lips. The kiss is chaste, over before it’s begun.

“Good girl, now go on.” Tapping her ass as she walks past me, I watch until she disappears. Gently closing the door behind her so she doesn’t hear what I’m about to say and do.

I catch Joe and Eli coming up the driveway, boxing in Chambers and his guards. “Fucking cheap whore. Just like her mother,” Matthew curses, disgust curling his lips.

“I warned you.” My fist flies, breaking his nose and knocking out a tooth on impact. “I told you to watch what you say to her. She’s the queen of my entire fucking world. Never again will she hear a cross word you speak to or about her.” Eli and Joe have both his guards in chokeholds, so he’s helpless.

“I know you came here to extort me. It’s how men like you work. I was prepared to pay off whatever amount you wanted so you would leave her alone and ensure this man you chose for her would as well. Now you’re lucky to be walking away with your life.” My anger pulses through my veins; the need to eliminate this man is strong. “She’s Daddy’s girl now, and that’s never going to change.”

Chambers spits on the ground in front of me, infuriating Zak, who coldcocks the man, forcing his body to fall down the stairs. “Make sure they leave,” Zak instructs Joe and Eli as they drag the guards down to the car. “Enjoy your girl,” he mutters to me before leaving for his own meeting.

Entering the house, I hear laughter from the kitchen, and it’s apparent that Sally has perked up Soren’s mood, making me grateful to have her around. She’s not just my chef or housekeeper, Sally is family, mother-like, and I’m happy to share her with my little girl now.

CHAPTER 10

Soren

I feel cold. Down to my bones, freezing cold. Despite what I said and did out there, I don’t know how to feel about any of it.

My father heard me refer to a man as Daddy.

While I’m not ashamed of who Adonis and I are together, it doesn’t mean the rest of the world needs to know about it. And given my father’s nature, he will think of that as a weak spot for Adonis and use it against the man I’m coming to love.

“Whatever it is, it will be fine.” Sally smiles at me as she scoops out a bowl of the stew she’d been cooking since long before I arrived. Pushing it towards me, she cuts up a toasted baguette and slides that over as well.

“What if it isn’t?” I whisper as I blow on a spoonful of meat, potatoes, and veggies. Flavor explodes on my tongue as I savor the first bite, chewing slowly before swallowing and immediately going for a second. “This is delicious,” I compliment as I dip the bread, soaking up some of the gravy before biting into it.

“Thank you, and I know it will. Mr. Lorde doesn’t back down from anything. Whatever just happened out there will not deter him from getting what he wants.” I love her confidence in the man. “Besides, if he doesn’t make it better, then I’m sure my famous chocolate lava cake will do the trick.” She winks when I giggle. “Dessert makes everything better.”

As Adonis enters the room, the air becomes charged and crackles with his presence, and I want nothing more than to jump into his arms, wrap myself around his body, and never let go. But I don’t know what he’s feeling.

Sally diligently sets stew and bread across from him as he slips onto the stool next to me. He eats silently while Sally chatters away about everything and nothing. Talking about the menu for the weekend and asking me what kind of desserts I like until there’s nothing left for her to do, and she leaves us alone.

Unable to handle the silence any longer, I blurt, “He’s going to blackmail you.”

“You think so?” His words come off casual; I can’t get a read on him. I don’t know what he’s thinking as he sits stoically beside me. “What for?”

I glance at him, my eyes snagging on the scratch marks littering his chest. I can’t help licking my lips as I remember doing that to him and what I did after. “He…uh…he’ll want money or me, depending on what’s on the line. My parents seemed pretty adamant that I marry that other man.” I can’t even recall his name now.

“Robert Stark,” Adonis spits out.

“Yeah.” I nod, blinking because I can’t stop staring.

“Soren,” he snaps, causing me to sit up straight and tear my gaze away from his chiseled chest. “You want something?” His mask is in place, purposely making it so I can’t read him.

Manipulation.

It’s something I know a great deal about. My own parents have been doing it to me for years. Always for their own gain, though. It has never once benefited me, but I think with Adonis, it just might.

Dampening my lips, I slide off the stool and step between his spread thighs. The swell between his legs is quite prominent; my man is ready for me.

“You’re mine, aren’t you?” I ask him as I reach across the counter for the paring knife Sally had washed and placed on the drying towel before leaving.
