Damon raises a brow. “Behave.”

Both boys swallow, suddenly looking significantly younger than their early twenties. Heat burns at my cheeks at what Bash had implied.

Shame makes me correct him. “You are aware that the marriage is temporary, right? I assumed you’d know.”

My fingers dig into the fabric of my skirt to hide the fact that they’re shaking, and Damon gives me a reassuring squeeze and scowls at his brothers.

His brothers laugh in shocked surprise.

“We know exactly how this is going to play out.” Bash winks. “Sister.”

Chapter 42

Damon

“Sir, if you could sign here, here and here.” The head of accounting points toward the papers on my desk. He’s flagged where I need to sign with yellow flags.

Normally, I’d take the time to read the document front to back, but I can’t take my eyes off Misty sitting in the cubicle on the other side of my office window. Her hair is curled into soft lavender waves, and it brushes over her shoulders every time she moves. She tucks her hair behind her ear, revealing the long column of her neck, and my mouth waters at the desire to mark her.

Before I left, I made sure she was covered in them, using my mouth and teeth to leave a visible trace on her that no man could mistake for anything other than what it is. A claim.

She runs a pen over her bottom lip, and my cock instantly hardens. It’s been three fucking days since I’ve seen my wife, and now being so close without touching her is torture.

I spent the entire plane ride home from Montana picturing her laid out in bed waiting for me, but she’d already left for work by the time I reached our apartment.

I know for a fact that I’d cut her workload down to revolve around me, but I’m not surprised Misty filled her schedule against my wishes.

I’d been like a lost puppy when I arrived at the office, only to find out she was in a meeting. Every second that delayed me from feeling her soft skin, hearing her greedy moans, and tasting her on my tongue was pure agony.

“Sir?” The head of accounting clears his throat.

I take my eyes off her and sign the papers, not bothering to read a single word. I am a drowning man, and every glimpse of her is a sip of air.

“Is that all?” I hand him back the papers.

“Y…yes. I’ll get these sent off right away.”

He leaves without another word from me, and I cuss low when Misty’s no longer at her desk. I scan the room, but there’s no sign of her fuchsia dress.

Just as I stand to go find her, my phone rings. “Fucking Christ.”

I sit back down and answer the phone. “What.”

There’s a deep laugh.

“Is that the way you treat your new business partner?” Maverick replies.

“I was just with you,” I grumble, so done with today already. We met through a mutual acquaintance years ago who thought, since we were both influential families with four brothers, we’d get along.

They couldn’t have been more wrong at first. The Blackwoods don’t bother coming out to the city, instead spending their time on the ranch, but when some shit went down last summer, we’d grown closer. A fucking suit bastard tried to run them out of town. I guess you could say we bonded over ruining that man’s life.

“There’s a few things I want to go over while they’re fresh.”

“The contract is nonnegotiable.” I drop my head, giving in to the fact that I can’t chase my wife every minute of every day.

“I fucking know that. I wrote it. Now, shut up and listen for once in your goddamn life.”

Prickles run along my spine as I bristle at his tone, but I’ve been around him long enough to know it’s not personal. “I’m tired. Make it quick.”
