“What do you mean a case?” Paige questioned as she hurried behind the flying dragon.

“I mean we have a magical object that needs to be retrieved.”

“Wow. Is it always this much fanfare?”

Dewey threaded through the shelves. “Not always. This is a red alert.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It is. Red alerts mean it is vital to the human race that we retrieve the object.”

Paige’s footsteps faltered. “Vital?”

Dewey spun and stared at her, hovering in the air for a moment before he flew backward as he spoke. “Yes. If we fail, the humans will likely not survive it.”

Her chin slid down at the words.

“Red alerts,” Dewey continued, “are matters of life and death. Literally.”

She considered it for a moment before hurrying to keep up with the dragon who flitted around a corner.

She shot after him and scanned the open area as the alarm ceased to blare. Red lights still flashed above them, though.

Across the space, the dragon stood on a table. A small machine puttered in front of him, spitting out a ticker tape. He clutched it in his paws, his eyes wide as he read it.

“What is it?” a winded Paige asked as she jogged the last few steps to the table.

“M. O. D. W. W. Threat level: High. Threat credibility: High. Retrieval priority: High. Closest library facility: Shadow Harbor.”

Paige crinkled her brow as she shrugged, failing to make sense of the message. “What?”

The ticker-tape machine ceased to rattle, and Dewey ripped the message from the page. Across the room, the door to the main library boomed shut.

“That’s probably Ronnie. She should have the full file.”

Paige hastened after the dragon weaving toward the door. The clink of a woman’s shoes on the metal stairs filled the air as they approached. Ronnie descended the stairs, a folder clutched in her hands.

“Didn’t expect this,” she called as they came together.

“A red alert!” Dewey said, the ticker tape trailing behind him as he flew toward her. “And we’re the closest.”

He thrust the tape toward Ronnie, and she grabbed it, scanning it.

“Target?” Dewey inquired.

“Mirror of Duplication,” Ronnie said, still scanning the words on the tape.

Dewey wove around in the air, nervous energy causing him to pace without using his feet. “And it’s the werewolves?”

“Werewolves?” Paige repeated, stunned.

Ronnie flicked the folder open. “Yes. A small contingency.”

Dewey squeezed his paws into fists. “Won’t be for long if they manage to acquire it.”

“That’s why it’s a code red.”

Paige shifted her gaze between them, eyeing the exchange. “I’m sorry, I’m playing catch up here. Would one of you mind filling me in on what’s happening?”
