“Shadow Harbor can get cold.”

“Eh,” Dewey said with a shrug. “Not as cold as the mountains of Romania. And I was never outside anyway.”

“Good point. Okay, so we stop for fish and chips. Then we stop for sweaters. And then…”. She flicked her gaze to Dewey and pointed a finger at him for the next location.

Dewey flitted over to the RP and pressed a button. A new picture filled the screen. “And then on to Castle Larny.”

“Ooh!” Paige murmured as she stared at the picture of a large stone castle. Towers and turrets poked into the sky from the boxy structure. “I’ve never been to a castle before.”

Dewey settled back on the love seat across from Paige. “I have. It’s not that great. They’re drafty and musty.”

“Way to ruin it for me, Dewey.”

“Anyway, it’s now a hotel. I made reservations for us to stay there.” He motioned for her to return the RP. “I booked us in the bean-nighe suite.”

Dewey tapped the screen and spun it to show Paige.

“Looks fancy.”

Dewey nodded and turned the screen back to him. “And haunted.”

Paige sat up, her eyes wide. “Haunted? Seriously?”

“Yes, by a bean-nighe.”

Paige wrinkled her nose, tugging her lips back into a grimace. “What’s a bean-nighe?”

“A Scottish version of a banshee. But don’t worry. The Scottish version washes clothes for you. I figured given the state of your current belongings, it may come in handy.”

Paige flopped back into the pillows. “That’s just perfect. Just what we need. A ghost running around while we’re fighting werewolves and searching for the mirror.”

Dewey chuckled, tapping around on the RP.

“What’s so funny?”

He laughed again and shot her a glance. “Paige, there are no such things as ghosts.”

Paige narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you serious? There are like sixty types of vampires, thirty types of werewolves, fairies, pixies–“

Dewey poked a finger in her direction. “Don’t forget the varcolacs.”

“And dragons, but there are no such things as ghosts?”

Dewey snorted another laugh. “Of course not. Don’t be ridiculous.” He rolled his eyes as he tapped around on the device again. “Now, if we’re finished with the absurd talk about ghosts, let’s move on to the best places to search for this mirror.”

They spent the next several hours discussing the various locations to check in the nearby town, caves, and castle. Then they settled in to nap for a few hours before landing outside of London.

After a quick stop at the chippy and another in Edinburgh to purchase new clothes, including a dog sweater for Dewey that Paige quickly modified to fit around his wings, they slid into the car for the long drive north.

Dewey climbed out from his carrier, kicking it to the floor below and settling into the seat as Paige navigated across the Queensferry Crossing. Since they were leaving Edinburgh behind in the early afternoon, their trip to Loch Larny would take them until the early evening hours.

They arrived as the sun sank low on the horizon, painting the sky a deep red.

“Wow,” Paige said as she eyed the picturesque view.

Dewey climbed to the window, his tail swishing as he studied the horizon. “I’ve never been to Scotland.”

“Me either,” Paige admitted, swinging the car off the main road onto a smaller one marked with a sign reading Loch Larny and an arrow.
