Without waiting on them to say anything else I went into the house and locked the door behind me. I burst into tears immediately, regretting not letting them comfort me right away.

“And we have a new record for how fast you start crying once you get home.” Mallory came out of the kitchen in nothing more than yoga pants and an apron. “Pregnancy has made you a whiny little thing.”

I frowned at her top of choice and a laugh mixed with my sobs. “What are you wearing?”

“I’m making cookies. What did you expect me to wear?”

“A shirt, Mal! What do you mean?” I followed the smell of cookies and frowned when I didn’t see them anywhere. “Where are they?”

“I gave them to the guys since they were waiting outside. I had Avery run them out. Why are they outside anyway? Is that why you’re crying?” She made a face. “They don’t want to come in? Why not?”

I sank into one of the kitchen chairs and took a few deep breaths to stop the tears that kept leaking out. “They didn’t have any cookies when I saw them.”

“Maybe they didn’t want to share. Weird for the three of them, all things considered, but people can be passionate about baked goods.”

“I got fired, Mal.”

She quickly sat down next to me and grabbed both my hands. “What? What happened?”

I quickly told her everything and when I finished, she was glaring out the window at where the guys had been. I looked out and when I saw that they were gone, my stomach clenched and another strong wave of sadness hit me. “I told them I needed space.”

“That’s fair. If you need space, you have to take it.”

“Now I wish I hadn’t. What if they don’t want me anymore?”

Mallory cocked her head to the side. “Are you serious?”

“I shouldn’t have said it. I don’t need space from them. I need space from life in general for a little while. I lost my job. Do you know how much that terrifies me? I’m not going to be able to take care of us if I don’t find another job soon.”

Mallory suddenly threw back her head and laughed. She laughed until tears were squeezed from her eyes and her breathing became more wheeze than anything. “You jackass! You’re dating three rich guys. They want to spoil you. You don’t need a job.”

I looked at her like she’d lost her mind. “I’m not a kept woman. I want to work. I want to teach art.”

“That’s fine. You can look for work and find something that fits your life. You don’t need to panic. Those guys aren’t going to let anything happen to you. Even if they ran away, you own this house and that car. They’re in your name, Fifi. You’re okay.” She pulled me in for a hug. “Screw that Hendrix tool, though. I hope the rest of his week is shitty.”

“Thought you didn’t believe in wishing ill towards others?”

She shrugged. “Sometimes people ask for it.”

I sighed. “I’m going to go apologize to them. I don’t want to hurt their feelings. They didn’t mean to do anything wrong.”

“You’re not going anywhere until you eat something and calm down some. I’ll lead you in some guided breathing exercises.”

“God, no, Mal. Please.” I sighed when I could see that she wasn’t backing down. “Fine. I’ll breathe with you but if you try to align my chakras, I swear to god I’ll chakra your ass.”

“Mature. Real mature.”

I looked around at the house surrounding us and looked back at her. “I have to work. Maybe I don’t have to try to find the job that pays the most right now. Since we do have all of this. But I do have to work, Mal. I don’t want to use them for their money. Or have them think I am.”

“How did you become so good? I would use the hell out of those men and enjoy myself the whole time.” She wrapped me in a hug and sighed into my hair. “Alright, Pollyanna, let’s breathe and get you and the twin nuggets settled.”

Ihad a bad feeling. I’d learned in business that those bad feelings weren’t to be ignored but I was never as smart in love as business. Ryder and Jake had decided that calling their ex-wives to the neutral ground that was my house was a good idea. They wanted to confront them and end their shit for once and for all. I wanted them to leave Fiona the fuck alone so I’d agreed. The bad feeling hadn’t made itself known until after Ryder called his ex and she confirmed that her and Megan were together and would come right over. It was too late to speak up then, the crash was already set in motion.

Jake and Ryder sat in my living room, each silent as they waited for their exes to show up. I paced in front of the large front windows, keeping an eye out for whatever vehicle the two she-devils would drive. When I saw a red two-seater coming our way, I almost laughed at the cliche of it all.
