“Eggs Benedict, organic, of course, with fresh smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce is what I usually have.” She presses the elevator button impatiently.

“You’re shittin’ me?”

She rolls her lips, and I shove her in the shoulder lightly. “Oh my god, your face,” she laughs.

I run a hand through my hair. “It’s the only face I have.”

The elevator doors open, and a tenant hesitates before stepping out. He’s a fresh-faced looking dude with pale skin and a skinny frame. We move aside and I follow him with my eyes as he makes his way into the gym.

He swipes himself in with the keycard as we step inside. Aspyn presses the Penthouse button and scans her card at the same time.

I don’t like that she could be down here alone and some guy could come wandering in. It makes me realize even more that I have to be more vigilant than I’ve planned for. Sure, nobody knows her here, but at the end of the day, we don’t know if she’s been followed.

She eyes him as the doors close. “I didn’t think anyone else lived in this building,” she laughs.

“Yeah, it is pretty quiet. Especially where we are.”

The elevator whirs its way efficiently back to the top of the building. “So, breakfast?”

I shake my head. “You like surprises?”

“Not usually, but I’ll make an exception.”

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but she seems to be in a happy mood. And a happy Aspyn is better than a sad or angry Aspyn.

Plus, she’s gonna need to keep her strength up if she’s meeting the girls today.

That took all of one day before Deanna probably told Cash to invite her over. It’s inevitable that the nosy women of the club will want to get to know her, even if it is only for a few weeks.

Her prisoner comment still rattles around in my brain.

She deserves to see things other than these four walls.

And that’s what I’m here for, if she behaves herself.

ROCK

I let myself in, holding two bags of the best bagels in town.

Luckily, we’re in the type of neighborhood that is famous for ridiculously priced food that I’d never usually order. Since I’ve got a credit card without a limit and Tommy Huntley is paying, I go all out. I’m also carrying a tray with two coffees.

She never specified what she likes, so I just went with a cafe latte. I think that’s what chicks drink.

I make a mental note to stop by the hardware store, too. When I pass by Pirate, I give him a scratch on the head and he purrs. After last night, I don’t think he sees me as a threat anymore.

The thing with cats is letting them come to you. I’ve been around enough stray animals over the years to know how it works. And animals generally like me.

I make my way up the stairs toward the deck, unsure if I’m ready to see Aspyn in a bikini, and it turns out I’m right.

She’s doing laps. The lap pool isn’t huge but big enough for a penthouse.

I watch her glide through the water effortlessly. She doesn’t have a swimmer’s body, so I don’t know how often she truly swims, but her form is pretty good.

After a few minutes, she slows her pace and swims to the edge.

She rips her swimming goggles off and wipes her face, looking up at me.
