“A vampire club?” I repeat, feeling my pulse race.
“You’ll be safe with me, Eden,” he says gently.
My head bobs as I swallow thickly. I know Jesse won’t let anything bad happen to me, but the thought of being in a dark club with dozens of vampires? Nervous electricity ripples through me.
“Do humans come here, too?” I ask.
“Yes, but only if escorted by one of my kind. The club doesn’t allow unattended humans. It’s too risky.”
“But…I thought vampires rarely bite unwilling victims.”
“I meant risky for the vampires,” he explains. “The human authorities are watching us very closely. If a human were to consent, then cry foul, it would cause an even bigger divide than already exists. And there are those out there who wholeheartedly believe in vigilante justice. So, to circumvent anything like that from happening, vampire business owners make rules like this.”
The elevator stops and the doors swish open before I can answer. Placing a firm hand on my lower back, Jesse guides me out into a dimly lit hall. A beefy man stands in front of a set of double doors at the end, and we head straight for him.
“Your Highness,” the man breathes, straightening his spine as we approach.
“Hello,” Jesse says, pulling his wallet from the inside pocket of his jacket.
“No need for that,” the man says before Jesse can pull the cash from his wallet. “Please, go on in. I’ll let the bartender know your drinks are on the house tonight.”
“Thank you,” Jesse says with a single nod.
“Of course,” he says, then greets me. “Miss.”
I nod in response, then forget all about the encounter as we step into the club. There’s a deep bass beat that vibrates in my chest as my eyes adjust to the dark interior. Strobe lights flash over the packed dance floor, and I stare as all the bodies seem to move in a single, choreographed motion. I tear my eyes away from the hypnotic sight as we approach the bar, and the bartender hurries over to us.
“Your Highness,” he says with a reverential nod of his head. “What can I get you? I’d recommend the Type O positive. Or I have a fresh A-negative that is quite delicious.”
“None for me, thank you. But the lady will have––?”
Jesse’s words trail off as he waits for my answer, but my mind is still reeling over the bartender’s nonchalant offering of blood. I don’t know why I’m surprised. This is a vampire club, after all. I shake off my shock and clear my throat.
“White wine, please.”
The bartender gives me a nod and moves to pour the wine. When I look at Jesse, I find him watching me carefully.
“You could order something. I don’t mind,” I say, flinching at the crack in my voice.
Jesse smiles and shakes his head. “It would dishonor you should I drink from another source.”
“It would?” I ask, arching a brow.
“It would,” he confirms, then thanks the bartender as he takes my glass of wine from him. Lifting it to his nose, he swirls it around as he inhales. Then, handing it to me, he says, “Drink up. I want to dance with the woman I love.”
“Did you just check it for poison?” I ask quietly as we leave the bar and amble toward the dance floor.
“I did,” he says. “I am fairly certain we’re safe here, but…”
“But someone managed to get into the manor to poison your dad,” I finish for him.
“Exactly,” he says.
I take a few more sips of the wine, then set the glass on a nearby table. “I’m ready.”
Jesse grins and pulls me out onto the dance floor. The crowd parts for us, and we keep moving until we’re close to the center. Then Jesse grips my hips and pulls me close. Wrapping my hands around his neck, I move to the rhythm he sets.
Within seconds, I’m lost in the beat and the feel of Jesse’s body moving against mine. My blood thrums in my veins, and I feel almost lightheaded as we grind against each other. Jesse spins me around, and I can feel his hard cock rub against my ass with every movement. Sweat drips down my temple as we dance through several songs, and I find myself panting both with the physical exertion and the feel of him against me.
