“Well, neither am I.”

Finley stabs at the cake but doesn’t eat it. “I just… it’s always been us, you know? And now suddenly you’re all about this guy you barely know.”

My sigh is heavy.

Her gaze is a little glassy as she looks up. “I only have a few months until I go off to college, and I just thought… I don’t know.”

“Oh, Fin.” I get up and circle the table so I can wrap my sister in a hug. “It’s still you and me. Nothing’s gonna change that. Our circle just might get a little bigger.”

Finley discretely wipes her eyes with her napkin. “You really like him, huh?”

“Yeah, I do. I think you will too, once you get to know him.” I give her another little squeeze. “In the meantime, you can at least be nice and enjoy the perks.” I take my seat across from her, noting that Midas is on his way back to the table.

“So, it is about the money,” she says, but there’s more teasing and less snark in it.

“It’s not about the money,” Midas says from behind me.

“How do you know?” She challenges.

He bends over me and kisses me soundly.

“Oh, I see. It’s about the sex,” Finley mutters into her water glass.

“No,” he calmly replies, pulling out my chair and helping me up. “Although your sister is the most attractive woman I’ve ever had the pleasure of fucking.”

“Midas!” I backhand his muscular bicep, but he just gives me one of his rare, devilish grins.

Finley grumbles something under her breath that I don’t hear and stands up.

Midas must have paid when he got up, because he ushers us right out of the restaurant. Despite the way he poked fun at Finley, I can tell his demeanor has changed since the phone call.

“Is everything alright?” I ask as we wait for the valet to bring the car around.

Before responding, he casts a glance at Finley, who’s busy on her phone. “It was my grandmother. I need to go deal with some things.”

His hand ghosts down my cheek, wrapping around to the back of my neck and giving it a light squeeze. His nostrils flare with a faint touch of smoke that no one notices but me. "I wish I didn't have to leave."

“You could…” I step closer and set my palm over his chest. “You could come stay the night at my place after you’re done.”

“I’m not sure your sister would like that.”

I set my jaw, reach into my purse, and pull out my spare key. I always keep a spare in the small pocket in case I lose the massive key chain where I keep most of my keys. Opening my palm, I offer him the small piece of metal. “It’s my place. I can invite whoever I want.”

Finley is paying attention to us now, squinting at me and shaking her head before going back to her phone, probably complaining to her friends about how her sister has lost her mind. Maybe someday I’ll tell her all the things she doesn’t realize about this situation, but right now I think it would just freak her out.

He takes the key and tucks it into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. Then he kisses my forehead. “Thank you, Jeslyn.”

He steps back like he’s trying to pry two magnets apart, fighting the resistance his body has about moving away from mine. I understand the feeling. “Lennox will take you home. I need to attend to this immediately.”

That makes me frown. “You’ll be safe?”

“Always, my queen.” He grabs my hand and pulls me into his chest, kissing me once, twice, a third time, growing more desperate each time his lips touch mine. A growl rumbles in his chest when he finally forces himself away.

I smile, loving the effect I have on him.

“I’ll see you soon,” he bites off with a scowl, clearly unhappy about leaving.

When he walks away, I feel like a rubber band stretched too tight. I really hope whatever he has to do doesn't take long.
