“I hate to ask you this, Enzo, but can you buy me a plane ticket? I have nothing, no money. Every bank account is in Alexei’s name, but I need to get back to Russia and get to my family.”

“Ludmila, your family is not in Russia.”

“What do you mean?”

I put my arms around her and brought my forehead to hers.

“Tell me you love me.”

“I do. What did you say about my family?”

“Your family was extracted from Russia the other day. They are currently in one of my family’s houses in Napoli, accompanied by my cousin. Your sister is the only one who speaks English, so she was also the translator.”

Her beautiful doe eyes started to clear again, mimicking the color of the winter sky – a cold, striking blue.

“Oh, Enzo.”

“I sent him there the moment you told me about them. We can’t bring them here yet because they don’t have passports, but Cristiano, my cousin, is working on that. We can go and see them as soon as you’re ready. I told you, baby doll, everything you need, I will provide.”

“I love you.” She glued her body to mine. “Thank you! God, I love you!”

“Then say you’re mine. Say you’ll be with me for the rest of our lives. There are no excuses now, Ludmila. There are no more obstacles. It’s you and me forever. Are you ready for that?” When she just looked at me with no answer, I took my shot again. “If you’re not, it’s ok, I can wait for you. I can wait however long you need me to, but just tell me that one day you’ll come to me.”

“One day?”

“Whenever you want.”

“You…you don’t want me now?”

“Of course I do, doll, more than anything I’ve ever wanted in my life. But baby, I don’t want to pressure you. You’ve had five minutes of freedom and I never want you to look back at this night and think I’ve trapped you again.”

She laughed. Through all the tears she found the strength to laugh, and the sound was so pure, it made my hair stand up.

“Enzo, I could never compare you with Alexei.”

“Fine, then marry me.”

“What?”

“You don’t have to do it now, but I’m asking, Ludmila. Will you marry me someday?”

She took her precious time, and my heart refused to work anymore.

“Yes, but not tonight. I don’t want the rest of our life to start the day Alexei died.” She pulled me in for a kiss. It was gentle, but firm. “How about you ask me again tomorrow.”

She was right, tonight there was too much pain in the air still, but tomorrow? Tomorrow our life would begin and man, it would be great.

“I will make you so happy, my Russian queen.”

“You keep calling me that, but I don’t have a crown. I’m not fit to be queen.”

“Like hell you aren’t. You are my queen. I promise to love you ’til the day I die. I will respect you and put you first and never – never! – put my hand on you in anger.”

“Enzo, I know that. I love you so much, my chest squeezes when I look at you. You’re my all, my everything.”

On a will of its own, my hand moved down and pushed the waistband of the sweatpants she had on away. I was pleased to discover there was no underwear to stop me from feeling her up.

“What I promise, doll, is to put my hands on you every day to bring you all the pleasure you can take.”

“Do it now. Make me yours all over again.”

She didn’t have to ask me twice. Our mouths collided and we burned together, making love in our bed, starting our life. Now she was me and I was her – we were one.

I’d make her queen and soon, when my old man was ready to pass the torch, she’d reign with me over New York. It would be the end of an era…

…And the beginning of another.
