Logan rolled his eyes. “She got herself into this mess, it’s not your responsibility to get her out.”

A snort escaped from my nose. “What would Carson say if she heard you say that?”

He brushed it off, a guilty look on his face. He wasn’t a bad guy, just quick and stupid with his tongue.

“Just because you are upset about Maddie doesn’t mean the rest of us need to suffer from it,” I muttered.

Logan turned to me, his stare morphing into daggers. He thrust the door open, stepping into the cool air. I joined him, anger pulsing through my body.

“Just because you have no one to live for, Logan, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t!” I yelled, approaching him. He stood chest to chest with me, brothers standing opposed.

Logan snarled, hatred in his eyes. “You are delusional!” he screamed, pushing against me. “You think I am the one making you suffer? No, I am the only one keeping you and Liam fucking honest!”

I curled my hand into a tight fist, trying to keep a lid on my anger.

“Liam fucked up with Laila, and now is off in fucking la-la land thinking we are going to get out of this. We arenevergetting out!” he yelled. “We are destined to do this, we are made for this.”

I shook my head, not wanting to hear his words.

“What? You think you are better than this life now because you have some rich chick letting you stick your dick in her?” He chased my eyes down, trying to keep me looking at him. “Spoiler alert, Kai! You aren’t!”

“Stop,” I said, holding my hand up.

“No, you need to hear this.” He shook his head, continuing his verbal assault. “People like you and I, we don’t get a choice in this world. People like Audry do. What is she going to think when she finds the darkness inside your soul? When she notices that you’ve bathed in blood without a second guess or hesitation?”

“I don’t?—”

“You don’t,what, Kai? You don’t hurt people? You haven’tkilledpeople? We both know that is bullshit.” His voice dropped lower. “Liam may be the enforcer, but most of the bodies I hideare yours. The brutal ones are yours. Are you just not going to tell her?”

“I am protecting her!” I yelled.

“Protecting her? Or putting her in danger?” he said, jabbing a finger into my chest. “She might not know you are a Red Widow, but that doesn’t mean everyone in her life is the same. What do you think people will say when they find out a Santora is fucking around with a Widow? Do you think it will go over easily for either of you?”

We stared at each other, electric tension in the air. I tightened my hand into a fist again, struggling to control myself. I wanted to punch that cocky look off his face and wipe the floor with his words.

“The devil she doesn’t know can still hurt her.Especiallyif she made a deal in blood,” he muttered, getting back into the car.

I stood for a moment, my heart sinking and my stomach twisting. I didn’t want to believe his words—I didn’t want to hear them. But I couldn’t shake the truth in them.

Chapter 41

Audry

Ipaced the small apartment, throwing outfit after outfit to the side. There wasn’t anythingappropriatefor asking your possibly criminal ‘hook-up-but-more-than-that’ to a fancy banquet.Especiallyone where your parents would be laying on the third degree. I couldn’t put it off any longer, even if I didn’t find the right outfit that would have him paying more attention to me than my words.

I paused. The realization of what I was doing hit me.Why was I afraid he would say no? The thought settled into my stomach as I slowly sunk into the bed. The orange scarf tangled in my fingers as I replayed the possibilities. Why did I care if he said no?Another thought chased away the room.

I saw it in my mind’s eye, dancing with him, laughing. We ate the small stupid sandwiches. He was dressed in a stupid penguin suit that he wore well but wasn’t comfortable in.

“It isn’t his scene.” I shook my head, tossing the scarf onto the bed. But maybe he would go…for me? I tried not to get my hopes up, but it was too late. My hopes were up, and I wasn’t prepared for the possibility of getting crushed.

“He will say yes, this is stupid,” I said aloud. “When has he ever said no to me?” I twisted up my hair, the bun immediately falling out. After a frustrated groan, I just left it down.

A loud knock came at the door. My heart thundered with it as I peeked out the peephole. Kai stood there, one hand in his jean pocket and a sneer on his face.

I opened the door, Kai bursting in. He glanced around, searching. “I told you to stay at the hotel,” he said.

“I needed clothing and a few other things,” I said. “What’s wrong?”
