“He was a recent member of the Blue Flames Motorcycle crew.”

“I don’t know anything about that.” I shook my head. “I can’t help you.” I took another step forward, and she blocked my path again. Frustration from being trapped grew.

“Do you know Nathaniel Davis?”

Nathaniel Davis, I memorized his full name. I couldn’t give her a reason to suspect me more than she did. I schooled my expression like I had been taught since birth.

I shook my head. “No, sorry. I don’t think I’m going to be of much help. I left the bar pretty early.” I made another move to get away, wanting to be done with this conversation. Quinton had nothing to do with Nate, so why was his name brought up in this? Although, I couldn’t ask her that—then I would be in deep shit.

“A woman matching your description, dark hair, expensive perfume, was seen with both Nate and Quinton,” she said, pointing to my curls.

I did my best to smile, untucking myself from behind Kai. “Plenty of women have dark hair and wear expensive perfume. It’s hardly a unique description. Perhaps you should round all of them up?” I suggested. “There are a few in the shops we just passed, I’m sure you will find many women who were there that night.” I pointed behind us. All patience was lost from me.

Kai narrowed his gaze in warning as I mouthed off to a cop. What was getting into me?

Maddison sighed, glancing at Kai before turning her attention back to me. “Well, if you hear or remember anything, give me a call.” She handed me a white business card, her name and number on it, along with her title: detective.

Before walking off, she glanced at Kai once more, nodding.

“Do you know her?” I asked.

Kai shrugged, tugging us toward the coffee shop. “Maybe in another life.”

Chapter 36

Kai

Iwalked into the house, uncertain how I would let Logan into our little cop problem. I rehearsed possible ways I could break the news to him about his old high school ‘boo.’ But all of them exited my mind the moment he came into view.

Fuck me. Unraveling this mess was getting harder and harder with each passing day. The secrets piled up in the corner, a tower-like structure at this point, preparing to crush me.

Logan took a large bite of his sandwich, lettuce pieces jumping ship onto his plate. “You look like you saw a ghost,” he said, his mouth full and his voice muffled by the thick bread. The sight of Logan’s food made me suddenly aware of the emptiness in my stomach. But, even with the pang of hunger, I couldn’t shake the image of Maddie standing before me with a badge at her hip.

Maddie, of all people. She was a hellion when I knew her, untamable. Logan and her were like fire and gasoline, strong enough to make an explosion…and boy, did they.

“If this is about the gun training?—”

I held out my hand for him to stop and shook my head. “I did see a ghost today.” I nodded, leaning against the counter. A deepsigh echoed throughout the room as I prepared for the slaughter. We don’t talk about Maddie—not since she left.

Logan lifted a brow at me. “You might wanna see a doctor about that, man. Hallucinations…they aren’t something to play with.”

“I saw Mads today,” I said, gripping the granite counter.

Logan stared at me, mouth falling open. Small, chewed pieces of his sandwich fell onto the paper plate. He collected himself in a hurry, continuing to eat as if he didn’t hear what I said.

“Mads, as in Maddison McKenzie,” I said, trying to catch his eye.

“Yeah, so?” He shrugged. “We’ve been over for a long time.”

“Well, did you know she’s a cop now?” I said, sliding the white business card across the island bar. “A detective specifically.”

Logan placed his sandwich down, wiping his hand. Disbelief was evident on his face, but it slowly dissolved as he looked at the business card. “What the fuck has she done?” he whispered. It was a rhetorical question that didn’t need answering. Logan ran his finger along her name before tossing the card aside.

“She questioned Audry today. Cornered us on our way to get coffee. Means she is watching her, and bound to show up again.”

Logan rolled his eyes. “Next time, lead with the important information. Acopinterrogated Audry, which means Samuel and his goons aren’t too far away.”

“I thought you’d want to know.” I crossed my arms.
