“More like connections and influence.” He leaned closer. “You really don’t know anything, do you?”

“Anything about?” I asked.

He chuckled and made his way from the kitchen.

I stayed hot on his heels.

“Do we have a deal?” he asked, exiting the house into the yard. Logan tugged a gun from his waistband, pulling back the top portion.

I shifted uneasily on my feet, feeling a weight drop in my stomach. “Deal,” I said, nodding my head. The overwhelming feeling that I just made a mistake wouldn’t leave me—but that was a problem for another day.

Chapter 34

Kai

Screams. Blood-curdling screams. They echoed around me along dark, foggy walls. I stood in the center of the room, trapped in my younger self’s body. I moved slowly, my feet trapped against the concrete.

I had to get to her…I had to help! I pleaded with whoever would listen, but still, my legs wouldn’t budge. Instead, all I heard was her screams…

My hands scratched at my ears, pain and frustration increasing in intensity. In a stretch of silence, I took a breath, relieved it was over.

“Kai!” she shouted, her voice breaking through the deafening silence before her screams started again. This time, my legs moved. My blood pumped through my veins. I had to get to her. This time, I would get to her. The alleyway morphed into view, partially covered in fog.

There was that man with his wicked grin, lying on top of my Angel. I reached for my gun tucked into my belt. The other two men ran off, thinking better than to get involved more than they were.

I fired three shots.

One.

Two.

Three.

Blood pooled around the bodies, but neither moved. I made my way towards them, the alleyway quieter than ever. I pushed the large body off of her, stumbling back onto my ass. Nate’s face stared up at me, the glassy stare something I would never shake.

But it wasn’t Angel beneath him.

Audry’s sweet face stared back at me, the worry removed from her brows and her dark eyes missing her spark.

“No!” I screamed, tossing the gun away.

A hand squeezed my shoulder. I twisted around in a panic.

“Why didn’t you save me, Kai?” Angel loomed over me, her face bruised and dripping in blood. “You were supposed to be my big brother…my protector.” She held up the gun I’d discarded, the barrel pointed between my eyes.

Bang!

I jolted away, fear coursing through my veins. My room twisted and blurred around me, mocking me as I tried to reacquaint myself with reality.

Bang! Another gunshot forced me to my feet. I glanced at the empty bed, my heart plummeting into my stomach.

“Audry,” I whispered her name. I tugged on a pair of sweats, practically falling over. I half expected my feet to betray me again, for the floor to swallow me whole this time. But instead, it didn’t.

The house blurred around me as my feet pounded against the wooden boards.

“Audry!” I shouted as I burst into the backyard.

The early morning air kissed my flesh, the coldness cutting into my bones, but I refused to stop.
