She rolled up to the side, grabbed her shirt, and threw it on.

I was stunned and confused. “Is everything okay?”

Audry twisted her body around to face me, her eyes locking onto mine. The creak of the bed filled the silent room as she leaned forward, her soft lips brushing against my cheek. I could smell the faint scent of her coconut shampoo as she whispered, “Round two after breakfast?” The warmth of her breath tickled my skin, sending shivers down my spine.

Fuck, this girl would get me in trouble,I thought, letting her drag me from bed with the promise of more.

I sanded the rough wood, working with the grain. Logan and Liam bickered about how and where to lay the new tile. Their voices carried across the front yard, tension growing by the second. Some contract worker fluttered about, trying his best to avoid getting caught up with the two. The monotony of sanding normally calmed my mind, but everything was off today.

The sawdust smell was mixed with the acrid scent of grout, forcing my nose to turn up. Liam was on edge. His newest hookup had kept him up late—and, per Logan’s complaints, the whole house.

I rolled my eyes as the two shouted louder. My gaze followed the sanding motion, hypnotizing me till the only thing I thought of were her dark amber eyes.

Audry had me drop her off at her apartment with no round two. Her mother called her six times in twelve minutes, and her father sent her a variety of texts ranging from vulgar to downright fucked up. She tried to hide them from me, but the small glances I stole told me enough.

The frustration still hadn’t left my stomach over her family. The more she told me, the more I realized being a Santora really was fucked up.

“What has you so giddy?” Logan asked, taking a seat next to me. He leaned back, observing me closely.

Liam walked up after, cocking his head before his eyes went wide. “Oh, man, Carson is going to murder you, brother.” The corner of his lips turned up in a smirk.

My face flushed with embarrassment as I fought to keep my composure. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I managed to say, my voice shaky.

Logan’s heavy breathing filled the air as he leaned even more forward, his eyes burning into mine.

I struggled to avoid his stare, but it was locked, loaded, and ready to kill me. A single, curly black lock fell between his eyes as his eyebrows shot up.

Suddenly, he bellowed, “You fucked her?”

I stopped mid-sanding, my eyes widening in shock. The sound of the buzzing sander faded into the background as my heart pounded. The smell of sawdust filled my nostrils as I glanced up at him.

“Piss off,” I said, shaking my head.

Logan groaned in defiance before stomping off into the house. The sound of his footsteps echoed in my ears.

Liam slid into his spot.

“What’s his problem?” I asked, throwing the tool.

He leaned forward, a softness in his stare. “Don’t get attached, Kai.”

I rubbed my nose, the sand particles irritating me. “I’m not gettingattached,” I grumbled. “You fuck around with women all the time.” I motioned to the house. There is no doubt that those walls have heard and seen things that would make even a dominatrix blush.

“Fuck her, don’t fuck her. Take her on dates, ignore her. I don’t really care,” he started, folding his hands in his lap. “But take it from me. If she doesn’t know anything, it’s best to leave her out of our life.”

I stared at Liam, surprised. “You brought Laila in.”

“And that’s a mistake I will never make again.” Liam shook his head. He rose to his feet and headed toward the house. He paused for a moment, spinning on his heel. “You know, it wasn’t your fault what happened to Audry, right?”

“Yeah, obviously.” I shook my head as I let out the worst lie I had ever told. I knew who Nate was. I should have paid better attention. I didn’t, and now Audry had paid the price—a stranger and an innocent.

“She is trouble, brother,” he grumbled before stalking off toward the house.

“Just get to know her!” I shouted after him. “Tomorrow, drinks and dinner?”

“Sure, whatever,” he spat back.

He was going to regret the sarcastic affirmative. I was going to hold him to it. Liam was a man of his word, and I knew how to play it to my advantage.
