He slowly shook his head. “It’s the best option you got.”

“She doesn’t want that,” I muttered. I shook away the feelings of inadequacy. Who would want to marry a man like me? I wasn’t safe to be around, and I have a track record of letting those I love down. The image of Angel flashed in my mind.

“We’re past doing what she wants,” Liam said, tucking his hands into the pocket of his jeans. “At this point, it’s do or die.”

My eyes widened at the worddie.Would another innocent fall because of me?

She isn’t exactly innocent, the idiotic voice in the back of my head reminded me. Its taunt came with the image of Audry fromthe first night I met her, covered in the ruby red liquid spilling from Nate’s body.

“She doesn’t want to marry me, Liam. So we won’t be entertaining that option anymore.”

Liam stalked closer to me, his eyes going dark and his jaw tightening closed. I held my ground, raising my chin as he got into my face. “Are you both so fucking stupid you can’t see the problem in front of you?”

“It isn’t stupidity, it’s respect.”

He scoffed. “I like Audry, I do. She isn’t worth losing you, though. If it came down to it, you or her…" he paused. “I pick you every time.”

He backed up and turned away one last time.

“Marry her, Kai, or she’s going to die. And there’s nothing we can do about it.” Liam walked away.

Chapter 49

Audry

Ilingered outside my father’s office, staring at the photos of my grandfather again. Kai had dropped me back at the hotel when he and Liam got pulled into ‘crew business.’ I still wasn’t privy to what that meant, but Kai assured me it didn’t have anything to do with me.

I shifted on my feet, uncertain how much my father knew about the underground world our family was involved in. He had to, right? That was why he feared Samuel Webb that night.

“Your father will see you now, dear,” his secretary perked up from behind me. Her voice was unexpected and sent a shot of adrenaline down my spine.

I was living in a constant state of edge. Loud noises, people laughing too loud, footsteps a bit too close—you name it, and chances are it made me practically jump from my skin.

But, I kept on going with a smile, covertly masking the reality of my life. I smoothed my dress and entered my father’s office. My mother wasn’t here this time, the couch empty.

My father was hunched over his desk, his head leaned against his palm and his glasses discarded onto the desk. He scribbled onto paper hastily, mumbling to himself.

I let myself in, closing the door. Then I sat down in the chair opposite of him, crossing my legs.

And I waited.

And waited.

He continued writing, not glancing up at me. This wasn’t new. He had always been engulfed in his work.

“Dad?” I said, leaning forward.

He jumped, staring up at me with him not behind his eyes. “Oh, Audry, I didn’t hear you come in.”

“Your secretary let me in. If it’s not a good time…" I said, trailing off. He was who’d one that requested my presence here.

“No, no, It’s…it’s fine.” He shuffled the papers around, scurrying to shield whatever he was working on.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

My father nodded.

“What are you working on?” I sat down in the chair across from him.
