“Geology department put it on. There’re a lot of important research figures here, though I couldn’t tell you what made them all that special. However, I’m sure Dr. Morris could clarify that for you.”

“If I have a chance to ask him, I suppose I will.” I chuckle.

I take a sip of the bittersweet drink, welcoming the flavor. From the moment I found out Melody was coming to this, I’ve only cared about seeing her.

“Oh, look.” Dr. Lewis nudges me. “There’s your TA with Fran Willis. I had no idea the two of them were friends. Fran is one of my best students. But considering Melody’s work ethic in saving her grade, it does make sense for the two of them to be close, I suppose.”

I nod, following his gaze to the entrance. I nearly choke on my champagne as I take in the sight of Melody, clad in a fitted shimmering gold gown.

She’s breathtaking, her hair in soft gentle waves and a full face of makeup. I might prefer her all natural, but there’s no way I can miss this moment.

She’s fucking drop dead gorgeous.

And she’s mine.

“Well, how’s the ordeal with Madeline?” Dr. Lewis turns back to me, pulling his eyes away from the two women. I force myself to do the same, not wanting him to catch me ogling her.

“It’s... I don’t know.” I huff. “She’s gone quiet—for now. She’s planning a wedding. I have Connor most of the time, but I don’t complain. I damn sure don’t say anything to her. That’s just asking for problems. I like it better when it’s like this.”

“I get it.” He laughs. “Silence means you get some peace.”

“For now, anyway. I don’t think Madeline knows how to live peacefully. If there’s no drama going on of some kind, she starts to get bored.”

“Sounds exciting.” He winks at me.

“More like exhausting,” I grunt, downing the rest of my glass.

My eyes scan the crowd again, and this time, I catch those pretty eyes with my own.

Melody smiles at me, and my heart melts in my chest. I give a slight smile and a nod back, but that’s all I can do standing next to the dean.

“I guess I better move on and continue my rounds,” Dr. Lewis grumbles. Looks like he enjoys these kinds of things as much as I do.

“Good luck with that.” I smirk, and then watch him walk away.

He heads to the next group of people, and I slink away the moment his back turns. Even if Melody and I were not romantic, I would still talk to her at this event. I just have to be careful as to howmuchI do.

But would I worry about such a thing if we weren’t sleeping together?

The thought sends my mind in a spiral. If she were a man, I would more than likely spend the entire evening talking with her, using pleasant conversation as a means of coping with this night.

However, I don’t want to fuel the rumors any more than I already have. But the thoughts all dissipate as I step up behind her, accidentally on purpose brushing her arm.

“Good evening,” I say in a low voice.

Melody spins around, her cheeks flushing. “Hi.” Her voice is timid and sweet, and my eyes are drawn to the plump red lips, begging for me to kiss them.

Fuck, the things I want to do to her.

I swallow hard and give her a pleasant smile, shifting my gaze to her blonde friend. “And who is this?”

“Oh.” Her eyebrows shoot skyward. “This is Fran. We met when we worked together. Now she’s pretty much my best friend.”

“Yes, I am.” Fran steps forward, a giddy smile on her face. “I am definitely her best friend.” She extends her hand and I take it, shaking it.

“It’s nice to meet you, Fran,” I tell her, eyeing Melody.

Part of me wonders if she knows. I can’t imagine having a best friend that didn’t know what was going on. However, no one I know or am close to has any idea about Melody.
