Something stirs in my chest at the sight of Melody laughing and dabbing flour on the boys’ noses. And suddenly, I’m wishing we were here alone.

“First batch is done,” Melody chimes as the oven goes off.

The boys cheer, and I smile as she delicately removes the pan from the convection oven.

I take in the cookies, and despite having eaten plenty of chicken parm, my stomach growls at the sight.

“Can we take some of these up to my room and play some video games?” Connor looks to me for an answer.

I shrug. “Why not? Have a good evening with your friend.” And I mean it.

I want the boys to have a good time. This is the happiest I’ve seen Connor in a long time.

And the thought of some alone time with Melody sounds nice.

Melody grabs a plate and places a few of the cookies on it. She hands it to Connor, and the two boys take off, already shoving the warm goodness into their mouths.

“You didn’t have to do this for them,” I say as soon as they’re out of earshot and the kitchen doors close.

“That’s okay.” Melody shoves the last panful into the oven and starts the timer. She begins to clean up, moving the dishes to the sink. “I always wanted to open a bakery.”

I raise my brows. “A bakery?” I did not see that coming.

“Yeah.” Her cheeks flush. “I know it sounds so silly, but it’s just kind of my passion. I know it won’t happen, at least, not for a long time. I need to graduate so I can get a steady job that will support Dorian and me.”

“That’s admirable,” I take in the way her eyes sparkled as she spoke of her dream. But just as soon as reality hit her, they lose their shine. “I hope someday you can open the bakery.”

I snatch up one of the cookies and take a bite.

I have to fight really hard to hide back the groan. “Wow, these are good.”

Her cheeks redden. “Thank you. I’m glad you approve.”

“Absolutely.” I finish the cookie in just a few bites before joining her in the cleanup process, washing the pans, bowls, and utensils she sets in the sink.

“I could’ve cleaned up.” Her voice is soft as she begins to dry them. “I know I made a mess in your kitchen.”

“It’s okay.” I catch a hint of her perfume as she slides in beside me, picking up another one of the clean dishes.

My cock comes to life as her arm brushes mine, and it’s almost embarrassing that I react so strongly to her.

But I don’t miss her breath catching, either.

Don’t go there with her.

She peeks up at me as I dry my hands on the towel, and the desire I saw in her eyes earlier is back, raging beneath the beautiful blue hues and awakening in me a matching force.

Fuck.

I glance back at the kitchen doors.

I’d hear the boys coming if they decided they needed more cookies—not that I’d let them have anymore. My tongue runs along my bottom lip as I gaze down at Melody, my heart beating wildly in my chest.

Before I can think it through, my fingers are slipping into her soft red hair.

My nose brushes hers, and a fire ignites in my core.

She makes the final move, standing on her tip toes to bring her mouth to mine.
