Melody

I’m such an idiot.

I don’t know what came over me in Dr. Banks’s office this morning, but I’ve been waiting all day for him to fire me. I mean, that’s what heshoulddo, right? I broke rules, and I don’t even know why I did. I was just...

At first, I was trying to console him. I could tell that he was distraught, but after a few moments...

I just wanted him to kiss me.

I roll my lips against each other, feeling the smooth texture of the lip balm I’ve just applied. I have fifteen minutes left of work for the day, and not a word has been uttered since this morning. My eyes flicker in Dr. Banks’s direction, and his eyes are focused on his computer screen.

He won’t even look at me now. He must think I’m a slut.

Swallowing the self-inflicted hurt, I start to pack up my things for the day. I finished grading and entering the quizzes beforehe ever returned from his afternoon class, but I couldn’t bring myself to say anything to him.

He clears his throat, and I look over at him, his eyes finally on me.

“Yes?” I squeak, pausing midway with the zipper on my bag.

“Did you finish grading the papers?”

I nod, awkwardly standing and walking toward him.

His eyes follow me as I reach the front of his desk, holding them out. “I also finished entering them into the system.”

“Nearly two hours ago,” he grunts, his fingers brushing mine as he retrieves the stack. My breath hitches, but if he notices, he doesn’t say anything. “You’ve spent the afternoon doing nothing.”

My mouth drops open, but nothing comes out. I can’t argue with the truth, which leaves me feeling more stupid than ever. “I’m sorry.”

His jaw tenses beneath his facial hair, the same hair that tickled my chin when his lips nearly met mine and his hot breath almost had me drunk on him. “It’s fine. I’ll let it go today, but it can’t happen again. I’m not paying you to sit around and pretend to work.”

“I—”

He holds up his hand. “I don’t want to hear any excuses, Ms. Everett. When you finish a task, please let me know.”

“Of course.” I duck my head. “It won’t happen again.”

“And neither will what happened this morning.” His tone is sharp, and I feel the weight of his words.

“Yes, sir.” I blink back the tears.

“Whatever attraction there is between us can’t go anywhere. The last thing I want is to hurt your reputation around the university, Melody. You’re a hardworking student, and I don’t want to mess that up for you.”

I hesitate, almost tempted to mention that rumors are already swirling through the student population. But I choose to stay silent. I don’t want him to think that I’m begging him for more.

“You can call it a day, and I’ll see you in the morning,” he continues when I don’t answer him. “Have a nice evening, Ms. Everett.” The way he says my name stings, but I get it.

I crossed a line, and he’s setting things straight.

Ugh, just wait until Fran finds out how stupid I was. I was so worried about the rumors spreading and then I just went and threw myself at him.

I sling my backpack over my shoulder and slip out of his office in silence.

The hallway is mostly empty, except for a few of the football players standing outside of another professor’s office. I do my best to squeeze past them, none of them offering to step out of my way.

“Excuse me.” I bump past a blond, tall one who reeks of cheap body spray.

“Oh, sorry,” he murmurs, but he doesn’t move. Instead, he presses against me, pinning me against the wall for a moment.
