My eyes widen and I look all around us. “Don’t say it so loud.”

“Oh. My. God.” She leans back in her chair. “That’s wild! You’re literally two yearsolderthan me.”

“I know.” I shift in my chair. “I know it’s weird. I just... When I was in high school, I was still so awkward, and my parents were strict. Then my parents passed away, and I’ve just been a little busy to even think about anything else other than bills and Dorian, so...”

“We have to get you laid.”

“No, we don’t.” I shake my head. “I’m not sleeping with some random guy for the hell of it. That’s disgusting—for me, anyway. It’s fine if that’s your thing.”

“It’snotmything.” Fran bursts into laughter. “But seriously, I think you should take a dive. How far have you gone with a guy?”

“Kissed a guy…once.” I cringe as the words leave my mouth.

“That’s literally so sweet. How old were you?”

“Fourteen.” I groan. “On a round of spin the bottle. It was literallynothing.”

“Nah, it stills counts.” Fran smiles. “I mean, when I played spin the bottle once, itreallyturned into something.”

“Ew.” I laugh. “I don’t even want to know.”

“Yeah, I don’t like to talk about my three-year serious relationship, either.” She laughs, but not a bit of humor is in her voice.

“I’m so sorry.”

“We broke up during my freshman year of college. As it turns out, hewanted to sleep around and party a lot more than I did.”

“Jerk,” I mutter.

“Right-o.” She laughs. “But anyway, back to the main topic of conversation.”

“I don’t want to talk about my virginity.” I say the last word in a near whisper.

“That’s not what I was going back to, silly.” She squeezes my forearm. “I mean, what’s going on with you today? Something seems off. Did something happen with Dr. Banks?”

My cheeks grow red again, and I hope she doesn’t notice. “Um...”

“Did he... Is he... interested in you?”

I shake my head. “No, it’s not that. It’sme.”

“You?” Fran looks confused, but then her jaw drops. “Oh.You mean, youhave a thing for him?”

I peek up from my hands, bracing for her disgust. “Yeah... Maybe a little.”

She doesn’t react the way I expect her to. She just grins, waving me off. “No big deal. We’veallhad our crushes. Some of the professors are justveryappealing. I think it’s the fact that they’re intelligent, you know? And the authority they bring. I was head over heels for Dr. Lewis when he taught my economicsclass my sophomore year. I swear, I didanythingto try and get his attention.”

“Really?” Her words bring me some relief, but I try to play it off while my mind is still a barrage of emotions from Dr. Banks being so close to me.

“Yeah, I don’t think he ever looked twice at me, though. I don’t have the hot-girl looks like some of the girls. Like you, even.”

“That’s not true. You’re gorgeous.”

“For a five, maybe.”

“Stop it.” I swat her arm. “You seriously are. I mean, look at me, I’m well on my way to my mid-twenties, and I haven’t been withanyone.I’m pretty sure that says a lot.”

“That’s not because you wouldn’t have plenty of offers,” Fran says. “I think there’d be a whole line of men waiting for you if you’d just put yourself out there.”
