“Good morning.” She steps into my office, her eyes dancing across my face.

She looks stunning in her black dress pants and olive blouse, accentuating her creamy skin tone and ginger hair. Shows hints of her curves without being provocative.

Too bad my body takes notice anyway.

“Morning,” I grunt, nodding to the chair opposite my desk.

She sets her bag and lunchbox down near the chair before taking a seat. I wait for her to say something, but she remains silent.

“I have some papers for you to grade.” I reach for the stack of pop quizzes from another class I teach. “The key is at the top.”

Ms. Everett nods. “I can do that.” Her fingers brush mine as she takes the papers from my hands, making my blood boil in my veins.

She doesn’t do it on purpose, I can tell, but I still grit my teeth, fighting the urge to rip my hand away.

The last thing I need is Ms. Everett to know that she affects me in any way whatsoever. This is solely a professional relationship.

“Wow, there’re a lot of these.” She giggles as she flips through the stack. “I didn’t realize how many students you have.”

“Yeah.” I bring up my class emails. “That’s why you’ve been hired. It’ll allow for me to focus more on the course material.”

She nods and gets to work.

Over the course of the next couple of hours, I spend my time working through emails and going over the lectures I have planned for the afternoon. I teach two classes, and they alternate days. It provides some mental balance for me.

“Here.” Ms. Everett stands to her feet and holds out the papers to me. “They did pretty good. The average score was eighty percent. I wrote down the stats on another sheet of paper for you to view.”

I raise my brows at her. I never asked her to do that, but I can’t say I’m not thankful that she went above and beyond. “I see.”

“I have a class to get to, and then I can come back, if that’s okay.” She sets the stack down on the edge of my desk when I don’t take them from her hands. “It’ll just be fifty minutes.”

“That’s fine. You can enter those grades into the system when you return.”

“Okay.” She smiles at me, her thick lips curling upward.

My mouth salivates at the thought of taking those lips with mine, owning them. Claiming them. The thought is jarring.

“See you soon,” I choke out as she exits the room.

Everything about the way I’m feeling is inappropriate, my cock straining against my dress pants, just like the last time. However, I don’t have the option to act on it. Thankfully.

“Knock, knock.” Dr. Lewis pokes his head in. “You have a moment to chat?”

“Of course.” I pull away from my computer. “What can I do for you?”

“Well.” He plops down in the chair across from me, letting out a sharp sigh. “I heard through the grapevine that you hired a TA.”

Shit.

I had the intention of talking to Dr. Lewis about my decision to hire Ms. Everett and that she was an out-of-pocket expense formenot the university. Part-time professors aren’t allowed assistants.

“I did hire an assistant to help me with grading papers.” I keep my tone cool. “There’s a lot going on in my personal life with my ex-wife, so the extra hand is helpful in getting work done in the most efficient way. I’m paying her out of my own pocket. It’s not on the university’s tab.”

Dr. Lewis nods. “I see. And is everything okay at home? Is there anything I should be concerned about?”

I can’t really read his tone, but it’s not intimidating to me. “Everything is fine. It’s just a matter of my ex-wife being a little unpredictable with my son’s schedule.”

“Ah.” He runs his fingers along the wooden arm of the chair. “Ex-wives can be difficult. I went through a divorce six years ago, and I have to say, I don’t think I’ll ever get married again. I have two great kids from it, but that’s where it ends for me. I don’t miss the drama.”
