I have no idea how, but I need to pass Dr. Banks’s class. My little brother depends on it.

“What’s wrong with you today? You seem extra stressed, if that’s even possible for you.” Fran leans against the hostess stand at the front of Bert’s Bar and Grill as she twirls one of her blonde strands with her finger, looking over at me with a curious gaze.

I sigh.

I wouldn’t say that Fran and I arefriends. We work together.

But she’s about as close a friend as I have these days.

I quit having time for friends four years ago.

Regardless, Idowant to vent a little. “I’m failing one of my major classes.”

Luckily, the place is almost empty. Just a cute kid sitting in the back who is here with Bert and an old lady who is here all the time doing some crosswords.

I appreciate the tiny break, even if my wallet doesn’t.

“Aw shit.” She frowns. “Whose is it?”

“Hard-ass Banks.”

She makes a face. “I couldn’tstandhis class. The guy thinks his class is the only one we have. It’s insane. I barely scraped by. I avoid anything taught by him now.”

“Yeah. I tried telling him that I work two jobs while trying to go to school full time. It’s nearly impossible to get all his homework done when that’s all you focus on. He didn’t care at all. Had the nerve to call me lazy.Me!”

God. I wish Icouldbe lazy. Even for five full minutes. Lord knows I need it.

“Ugh. Who does he think he is? It’s not like he knows your life. It’s not fair to make that kind of assumption.”

My throat starts clogging, so I straighten back up, shaking my head. “You know what? I’ll figure it out.”

She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “I know you will. It just sucks that he never listens to the feedback. I thinkeveryonecomplains about the workload in his class.”

I shrug. “He’s probably just one of those professors that loves his job so much that he wants every student to live and breathe his class.” I laugh, but it lacks any sense of humor.

Fran joins me with a giggle. “That might be true. It’s a good thing he’s only part time. Imagine if the guy taught even more classes... I’d probably just drop out and become a stripper or something.”

What?

“He’s only part time?”

“Yeah, he’s hella loaded.” Fran giggles. “I heard he’s a billionaire. Owned some super successful construction company and then sold it or something. Regardless, I don’t think he needs the money. He’s related to Jasper Banks.”

I raise a brow. “The actor?”

“Yeah. I don’t know how they’re related, though. I don’t think they are brothers. More like cousins or something.”

“That’s crazy.”

No wonder he’s so handsome.

I check the time.

My shift ends in less than half an hour, and with this place the slowest it has been in ages, I need to figure out how I’m going to make up for the lost tips.

Slow afternoons would be great... if I were as loaded as Hard-ass Banks.
