Taking a deep breath, I halfway expect it to be Ms. Everett. However, the moment the door opens, I’m met with a very different face.
“Can we speak for a moment?” Dr. Lewis, the dean, says to me.
“Of course.” I open the door wide and step to the side. “What can I do for you?”
He eyes me as he steps inside. “Are you okay?”
“Yes,” I lie, forcing a smile. “I just have a bit of a headache this afternoon.”
“Ah, well, I won’t take up too much of your time, then.” He chuckles. “There’s nothing worse than a headache after two repeated lectures.”
I smile, but keep quiet.
“So, I was hoping that you might be able to assist with the historical society’s gala next month.”
“Oh?” I arch a brow.
“I know it’s not really your thing, but I need one more professor to sponsor and be present there. We need a presence, and a man of your standing would look absolutely stunning on our behalf.”
If you only knew what I was just doing...
I scrutinize the whitish, blonde hair on his head and his clean-shaven face.
He’s a tall but slender man, standing an inch or two above my six-foot frame. His blue eyes hold mine, waiting for my answer.
I’m not sure how many years younger the dean is than me, but heisrather young to be in such a position. And I have no idea how he came to it.
“It would be an honor,” I finally say. “I’ll be there.”
“Wonderful.” He beams. “Now, you get some rest and take care of that headache.”
“Thank you,” I call after him as he leaves, shutting the door behind him.
Now I just have to figure out why my headache comes in the form of impish red hair and captivating green eyes.

Why did he just run out like that?
My mind keeps replaying that moment two days ago over and over.
Did I offend him that much by falling asleep? God, I’m still mortified. How could I just crash like that?
Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I know how much he hates me. I mean, he is failing me, right?
Or maybe he ran because of the way I reacted?
HowdidI react?
I rub my temples, leaning against the hostess stand.
“You look like you’ve had a hell of a day.” Fran nudges me, leaning her head to peer at me. “Something happen?”
“No,” I lie. If only it was just the one day. The last couple of weeks have sucked big time.
I’ve talked to her enough about Dr. Banks. I don’t want her to think he’sallI think about, though there might be some truth in that.
