“I’m just being friendly,” Wyatt says, placing a hand on my arm to move me out of the way so he can get back inside the barn.

I frown as I follow him down the alley, hating how I liked the heat of his palm on me. “But my body needs more than buttery, flakey, gooey goodness.”

He pours the water into Millie’s tank and nods. “Got it.”

“You do?” My brows lift as I watch him.

“Yeah, I hear you.” He nods stoically.

“Okay then,” I reply with a sigh and then point at Reginald’s pen. “And I do my own chores.”

He pauses, his brows lifting at that response. “Is that right?”

“Yes,” I reply, hating the way his eyes are burrowing into me right now. God, it feels hot in this barn.

He licks his lips slowly as his gaze travels down my body. “Hearing you loud and clear, friend.”

I sigh heavily and turn to leave the barn to go to work. That was easy enough. Everly was right. Wyatt is just sweet and not at all psycho.

My phone buzzes in my back pocket as I walk the fence line with Millie and Reginald. I smile as Millie nudges my butt, trying to find the source of the foreign sound.

Everly: Hey Trista, how are you doing? I heard you weren’t feeling well. ?

I roll my eyes at that comment, not at all surprised that my bout of morning sickness made its way back to Everly. If she texts me weekly, I’m guessing she texts her uncle even more.

Me: Hey crazy kid, I’m doing a little better now, thanks.

The meds haven’t completely healed me, but I notice that if I try to snack more often, the nausea doesn’t get quite so intense.

Everly: Great because Uncle Wyatt told me I could invite you to my graduation party! It’s in a couple of weeks, and it would mean so much to me to have you there. Can I send you an invitation?

I frown at this surprising invitation. The truth is, I would love to go because my bank account has never looked better, and I owe it all to this kid. But this past week, I’ve been a little overwhelmed by her uncle.

I thought the daily breakfast deliveries would stop. They didn’t.He just started giving me more of a variety. One day, it was a couple of boiled eggs. Another day, it was fruit and a protein bar.

Then the HelloFresh grocery box appeared on my doorstep, and the label said it was catered to healthy eating while pregnant.

Real subtle, Wyatt.

And as if things couldn’t get any more intense, Wanda the cleaning lady showed up yesterday. When I refused to let her come inside, she looked like she was about to cry. Apparently, Wyatt had prepaid her to come here weekly for the next several months, and if I refused her, then she was going to have to give him the money back. And she needed the cash to fix the foundation on her house, or it was literally going to crumble to the ground.

I freaking let Wanda come in and clean.

I’ve never had a cleaning lady in my life, though, so I couldn’t just sit back and watch her clean my mess that had seriously gotten away from me. I rolled up my sleeves and scrubbed the tub right alongside her. She cuddled Strudel, and we watchedThe Real Housewives of Salt Lake Cityon my iPad while we worked. Honestly, it was kind of a lovely evening. Jen Shaw is crazy, and I was happy to have someone to chat with about it.

And I swear my car was almost on empty last night, and this morning, the gas tank was magically full.

My eyes fly wide when I see a large delivery vehicle parked in front of the barn. “What in the world is that now?” I ask out loud to Millie and Reggie, who just ignore me.

I shoot a quick text back to Everly that I’ll RSVP soon and scurry my way through the muddy pasture. When I walk into the barn, I see two men hauling a giant memory foam mattress up my apartment steps.

“Can I help you guys?” I ask, my voice rising in pitch as they struggle to make their way up the steps. “I think you maybe got the wrong place because I didn’t order a new bed.”

“Our instructions say it goes in the apartment above the barn,” the old guy at the bottom says as he squat lifts. “And there are no other barns on this mountain.”
