Page 15 of Bulls and Their Boy

“You like marking him,” I observed, pushing Eli’s head to the side. “Is that a possessive thing?”

“Sure is,” he boasted.

“I like that,” I gave him, laughing. “So…speaking of boys…”

While Noah laughed, Eli cautioned, “Don’t scare him.”

“He rode a fucking bull. How am I scaring him?”

Noah was thrown a dirty look for laughing even louder at that, but Eli told me, “You and Damon are two bulls. He usually only rides one at a time.”

“He can learn,” I argued playfully.

“He’s in the corral, saddling the stallion.”

“Spirit? I like that horse. Let’s go look at him.”

Eli groaned, “Yeah, because I believe you have a sudden interest in horses.”

As we descended the steps, I reminded my friend, “You are the one that told me he was going to be here today.”

I guess I had a pep in my step after the fun with Roland the previous day, because Eli commented on it. “Did you and Damon have fun yesterday or something? You were half grumpy and now you’re all giggles.”

“Architect came by, and…”

“You fucked your architect? Burke!”

He was smiling ear to ear but trying to shame me. “He wanted it.”

“I’m sure,” he drawled, laughing a little. “So, you’re here…to get more?”

“Always,” I said simply. After all, I was a sexual being, and I didn’t apologize for it to anyone, not even my best friend.

“Well, at least you’re honest. Be…nice.”

“I’m always nice, until I’m not.”

Noah’s ranch was beautiful, so much so it made me okay to move to the country. There was a barn that looked like it could fit a 747 jet, bright red right smack in the middle. Up the little hill to the house, the road curved, but to the side and back of the barn was where the horses were kept. They were either in the barn or in the corral, where we walked that day.

The sky was cloudless, and the breeze was cool and easy. It was a perfect day, but what made it better was seeing Joel, sitting that horse, tall in the saddle and pretty as a picture. He saw me walking up to the fence with Eli and ducked his head.

“Joel, come over here,” Noah called form behind us. I hadn’t noticed him following. Noah climbed up on the fence to be more face to face with Joel when Spirit was made to walk over to us.

“Yessir?”

Noah must have been tired of the bullshit, and said, “Joel, this is Burke.”

Joel cut his eyes to me quickly, then stuck them squarely on Noah. “Sir? We’ve…met…”

His confusion was clear, but Noah simply said, “Yup. You have. Now, how about talking to the man?”

I was smiling but hid it as I lowered my head. “Shit, Noah.”

“Sir?”

It was Eli’s turn to speak, and he must have also been tired of it. “Joel, we know you like him and Damon. Talk to him. Shit.”

Then, they both walked off, and I watched them as Joel did.
