I can’t admit anything!

Casey’s coming back any second!

“We didn’t exchange numbers that night we hooked up, and I’ve been going into stalker mode trying to find you.” He laughs while I look past his arm, praying Casey doesn’t come jogging down the steps before I can get rid of Ben.

This is a nightmare! I have to get him out of here. Now.

But he’s oblivious to my stress. “Listen, I just wanted to say that I had a really awesome time with you at that party. And I know we were drunk, but I remember enough.”

I glance back at his face. Big mistake. His eyes are glowing with memories of us.

“It was hot and primal and…” He laughs. “Oh, man, I’d love a repeat, you know? I felt like we had a great connection, and I…” His voice trails off as he finally starts to pick up on my serious lack of enthusiasm.

My face flushes when he catches my eye. I really don’t want to be cruel, but I can’t encourage him either. “Yeah, I really was so drunk. I can’t remember much. Sorry.” My words are a mumbled mess as I look to the ground and feel the shame wash through me. It’s a tidal wave of guilt and regret.

“Well, maybe we could get together sometime. I could help you remember.” Ben gives me a hopeful grin. Stepping in close, he leans his hand against the tree trunk behind me and bends low, looking ready to kiss me.

I gasp and jerk sideways so he can’t reach my mouth.

He frowns, disappointment stark on his face as he mutters, “Or maybe not.”

“I’m sorry. I…” My voice evaporates when I spot Casey closing the distance between us. He’s looking kind of confused and hella annoyed as he steps up beside us. He must have seen Ben try to kiss me.

“Who are you?” he practically barks.

Ben’s eyebrows rise in surprise, but then his face breaks into a broad grin. “Oh, hey. Casey Pierce, right? You’re lightning on that ice, man.” He extends his hand to my boyfriend, looking so happy to meet him. “Good luck for the game tonight.”

Shit. Why does he have to be so damn nice?

I’m feeling worse by the second.

“Thanks.” Casey gives Ben’s hand a firm shake and asks again, “Who the fuck are you?”

“Oh. Name’s Ben. I’m a Cougar too. Play basketball.”

“Figures. You’re like a walking Burj Khalifa.”

Ben laughs, and I’m pretty sure I want to die right now.

Casey’s like a bulldog next to a towering Great Dane, and if there was a fight, I’ve got a feeling my riled-up boyfriend would kick ass.

“How do you guys know each other?” Casey points between us.

No, no, no! Don’t answer that!

“We hooked up at a party a while back.” Ben blushes while my insides combust. He glances at me with one of those secret smiles, and all I can do is stare back at him, subtly shaking my head. But not subtle enough. His smile only grows, his voice taking on a slightly boastful edge. “We had a good night. A really good night.” He gives me a wink that’s playful, and my heart starts to slither into the burning acid of my stomach.

Shit!

Casey’s eyebrows dip. “Oh yeah? When was that?”

“Back in…”

Fuck. No! Don’t say it!

“January?”

Ben looks to me for confirmation—this poor clueless man has no idea the bomb he’s about to set off.
