They were close to being as they were, but it had come with the help of the Savonas fortune, and that rankled.

“I have to make sure she’s okay, for Landon,” Jacob said.

Chapter Eight

Tamsin tried to stifle a yawn, pressing the back of her hand against her mouth. Mason had to leave for work early that morning. Ever since his meeting with Albert Delcoties a few days ago, he’d been a little distant.

He had still joined her in bed, but they hadn’t explored one another. She missed him. Several times she’d been tempted to ask what was on his mind, but she also didn’t want to be prying into his thoughts. She knew it was silly of her. After all, he was her husband. Were married couples supposed to have secrets? She thought about her parents. They had always been close, until the end.

Charlotte and Maddox Denton, the power couple. The couple everyone had wanted to be, and in the end, her mother had decided to leave the country to explore Europe, and Maddox was dead. Killed by his own son.

They were not exactly the picture of a good marriage. She thought about her uncles and aunts, but she had never paid much attention to them growing up.

David had to leave for an appointment, so she couldn’t ask him what his thoughts were. She blew out a breath and dropped the book she’d been reading. Once again, it was at a very graphic sex scene, and her body was on fire.

She couldn’t help but picture herself and Mason in the respective roles of hero and heroine. The sun that beat down on her also felt a little too hot.

Closing the book with a slap, she got to her feet and made her way inside the house. She had opted for no shoes. Several people in the kitchen smiled and greeted her. She accepted a glass of lemonade and took a seat at the counter to watch them. From time to time, she just watched people as they cooked.

She always enjoyed this. If her mother wasn’t cooking, then watching the main cooks was always fun. Tamsin wasn’t much of a cook herself. Her mother hadn’t exactly encouraged her in the kitchen.

Sipping at her lemonade, she tried not to think about the book or Mason, or her brothers.

He’d told her that they had asked after her when he’d gone to his meeting. She refused to feel guilty when it came to them.

“There she is,” Mason said, drawing her attention from watching the cooks. They all greeted him as Mr. Savonas.

He walked up to her, gripping her neck, tilting her head back, and then kissing her lips.

“I went looking for you in the garden. One of the guards said you had come back to the kitchen and not returned.”

“I needed some lemonade.” She held her glass up. “It tastes really good.”

He took her glass from her and had a large sip. “Real good. Are you busy, or do you want to come for a walk?” he asked.

She finished her glass, said her goodbyes to the staff, and took Mason’s hand.

There is only one place she wanted to walk. Taking hold of his hand, she didn’t care who saw her, or if they put two and two together, she took him to the corridor, leading to the staircase that would bring them to their bedroom.

Little by little, she had been moving her bedroom into his. It seemed logical to do that, since she slept in his bed every morning and every night. There was no point in her running across the hall to get changed.

“Tamsin, I meant an actual walk.”

He didn’t stop her from leading them to the bedroom, and she pulled him inside and closed the door.

She pressed her back against it, and even though her heart raced, she looked at Mason. Before leaving the kitchen, she had also picked up her book, and the page was marked with the square of the corner pressed down.

Tamsin handed him the book. “Please, read it.”

Mason frowned. “You want me to read your book?”

“Yes.”

He raised a brow but she refused to budge.

Mason sighed and then took a few steps back. He opened the book to where she had marked and began to read.

Tamsin nibbled her bottom lip and waited, her nerves slowly building as they started to get the better of her. She didn’t know what to say, think, or what to do.
