I glower at the men on the ground, making it clear that I will not tolerate any funny business before I jump down from the roof and answer the phone.

Anna’s gentle breathing brings instant calm to me. “Sergey?”

“Little angel.” I cough, lean against the SUV, and look at Ryan’s lifeless body.

I turn away from him and stare at my reflection. Most of my body is covered in blood, but it will wash off in the shower and I will be as good as new when I return to her.

Even if my world is as dark as the longest night, Anna is a ray of light. She reminds me that there is still good in the world, even with all the evil I have to do.

“The baby is going to be fine. She’s perfect and she will be okay.” There is joy in her voice, and I wish I were there right now.

“She?”

Anna laughs. “Yes! The doctor told me when he came in. We’re going to have a girl. A perfect baby girl.”

My world stops. I’m going to have a daughter. A little princess!

I’ll have a baby girl who takes after her mother. She’ll be the image of perfection and I will go to the ends of the earth for her.

And there is still plenty of time to get Anna pregnant with my son.

“Sergey, I was so worried about her, but she’s healthy.” Anna sighs with relief. “Our daughter.”

“She’ll continue to be fine,” I say in a choked voice as I look down at the man who almost took my family from me. “I left to take care of the man who did this to us.”

“I hope you made him suffer,” she says, her tone dark and serious.

Perhaps there is a little bit of evil at the bottom of my angel’s heart too.

She’s going to be the best mom to our child.

Anna clears her throat. “Will you come back to the hospital soon? Henrik is boring.”

I let out a sharp laugh. “I'll be there as soon as possible. I must make sure some shipments are made before I get back.”

She hums. “Okay. I will see you when you get here.”

“I love you, Anna.” My voice is deep and soft, warmth spreads through me. I had to tell her, there’s no point in denying it any longer.

My family is healthy, and Ryan will never be a threat to them again. Once word gets out about what happened here, there shouldn’t be any other threats either.

“What did you just say?” she asks after a long moment of silence. Her voice is shaky as if she does not believe the words that just came out of my mouth.

“I said that I love you, Anna.”

“Are you okay?” She laughs nervously, and I can just picture my little angel now, toying with something to keep her hands busy while she panics. “I didn’t think you’d feel this way about me. Are you dying? Is that why you’re not coming back right away? Is shipments a code word for I’m being loaded into a coffin as we speak?”

I burst out laughing and a grin spreads effortlessly as I get into my car. “No, Anna. That’s not a code word for being put in a coffin. I’m in my car right now and I’m on my way back to you. My men can take care of the business.”

She makes a soft noise in the back of her throat. “Can you repeat that again?”

What? I huff, “It’s not a code word for …

“No, not that, what you said before that …,” I can hear her soft giggle.

“Fuck, Anna, for the third time. I. Love. You. Silly woman. Sometimes you frustrate me to hell and back, but that keeps things interesting between us, don’t you think?”

Another pause follows, which seems like an eternity to me, she is still silent and I’m getting impatient, “Anna? I’m still waiting. You’ve got something to say?”
