“And what do you think?”

I set the envelope to the side even though I want to tear into it. The flap is already open, and Denis looks sheepish.

“Denis, do you know the results?”

“You are going to be a father.” Denis sits forward, his body tensing as if preparing for impact. “There is a ninety-nine percent chance that the baby she is carrying is yours. Which seems odd to me. When did you fuck her?”

I jerk the envelope back to me and tear it open, needing to read the results for myself.

Though I trust Denis, this is something that I must see with my own eyes.

If the baby is indeed mine, everything changes.

I expected this. Anna may be a lot of things, but she has yet to truly lie to me. She is honest when it matters, and I do not think she would lie about something as serious as a child.

I skim the papers, seeing that my DNA is a match for the baby’s. “I fucked her on the plane. That trip to Chicago. I should have known that she was not on birth control, but I got caught in the heat of the moment.”

“Unlike you.” Denis takes the envelope back. “You have been careful about fucking around and impregnating women.”

“Anna is different. Fascinating. She is not like the others.”

Denis glances at the monitors, staring at Anna as if he is trying to figure out why is it that I am so obsessed with her.

He will not find the answers he is looking for though. I am certain that he can’t see in her what I see.

She is otherworldly. Too sweet and good for a man like me.

Which is exactly why I set out to ruin her in the first place.

“What do you want to do with her once the baby is born?” Denis rests forward, questions lingering in his emerald eyes. “You cannot mean to leave her alive after the trouble she has put you through over the last few months.”

I arch an eyebrow, a muscle in my jaw ticking. “Denis, you have been with the Bratva for fifteen years and yet you don’t know our customs. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

“I was busy killing people and making them pay for the ways that they have wronged you. I didn’t have time to pay attention to women and children.” Denis shoots me a flat look before leaning back in his seat and tossing the envelope onto the desk. “Enlighten me, boss.”

My gaze remains glued to my little angel who is trying her best to be content in the gilded cage in which I have her trapped.

I put the keyboard to the side, crossing my arms. “Now it is confirmed, she is carrying my baby. My heir. Anna will not be touched by a member of the Bratva, or anyone. She is family now and we will lay down our lives to protect her.”

Denis’ lips press into a flat line. “And she will not pay for all that she has done to you?”

“No. Not how you think. She’ll pay but on my terms.” My tone is firm as I look at him. “You announce that no one is allowed to touch her. If anyone causes a problem with Anna, they'll deal with me, and they won’t make it out alive.”

“Will do, boss.”

Denis still seems unsure of the judgment, his spine stiff and his gaze shifting around the room like he is expecting Anna to jump out of the shadows and drive a knife into his back.

I get up and loom over him, making it clear that I will not tolerate any problems from him either. “You make sure she remains unharmed, understood? I will not allow even a fly to harm her. If my men so much as look askance at her, their eyes will be fucking gouged out, do you hear me??”

Denis nods and gets to his feet, taking a step back and clasping his hands together behind him. “Clear. I will spread the word among the men. Anna is family now and she will be treated as such.”

“See to it then.” I jerk my chin to the door, and he leaves, shutting it behind him.

As I sink back down in my chair, my attention returns to the screens.

I knew that she would not lie to me about our child.

She will be an excellent mother, nurturing and kind in all the ways that I cannot be. She will teach our child how to love and I will teach our child how to lead and survive.
