He slammed her into the wall with all his strength a moment later.

Even though her energy was dwindling rapidly, she pushed him again, calling on her last reserves. Her magic burst from her skin, burning the air with its spicy scent. She brought the poker up with a newfound quickness, aided by her power. Julius’ eyes widened. Probably realized that he’d failed to restrain her magic, that bastard.

Too late.

She speared him without waiting for another second to pass. His naked chest was completely unprotected, and the sharp end of the metal bar sank into his ribcage meeting little resistance.

He gasped and let go of her, stumbling backward. He grasped the poker and pulled it from his gut with a wet sound that brought forth tissue and blood. Moving fast as lightning, Violet picked up the dustpan and swung it hard against his head, knocking him out on the spot.

GAVIN

Steps echoed off the cave walls, growing louder as they drew closer. Beneath the stomp of wooden soles on stone, a scraping sound of something being dragged along the ground filled the space. Whoever was approaching was speeding up. The door screeched, and bright light from outside bled through the gaps.

Mios rose and almost hit his head on the ceiling. It took Gavin longer than his pride liked to pull himself to his feet, using the filthy wall for support.

A middle-aged man wearing brown pants, a white shirt, and suspenders entered the room. “Mr. Gavin.”

“Harry.” Gavin strode toward him and winced when his headache reminded him to move slowly. Myna’s father was gasping for air like he’d run all the way here, his complexion shiny with sweat. His eyes widened as they traced Gavin’s battered face.

“I feared it was you they had imprisoned here.” He looked around, making sure they were alone, and stepped closer to Gavin’s cell.

Then he fished a ring with hundreds of skeleton keys from his pocket, each with a different shape and size. “I’m getting you out of there.”

Gavin tried to move closer, but the ropes wouldn’t let him. “Hold on.”

“If I don’t get you out, they will kill you,” he said.

“Would they find out it was you who released me?” At this point Gavin wasn’t sure how far Julius would extend his punishment to Harry’s family if he were to find out the truth.

“I owe this to you.”

Gavin grunted, reaching for the bars. “Listen, Julius likes to hunt down people who break the law. Did anyone see you come here?” It wasn’t like he wanted to die, but he also couldn’t take anything lightly that would ruin this family and their future.

Harry looked up with worry etched in his brow, his face sober. “No one saw me, and he has your wife.”

“I beg your pardon?” Gavin stepped forward, not caring that the cords of rope rubbed his wrist raw. “What do you mean? Who has my wife?”

“The commander from the Iron Kingdom took your Mrs. into his room just now. He… he doesn’t seem like a good man. And he asked me not to disturb him.”

“Was she awake?” Gavin’s skin turned clammy and hot. He pulled harder on his ropes, and the metal of the bolts which fixed them to the wall groaned with the tension.

“Yes, but she wasn’t moving.”

“It’s the same poison he used on me. It keeps you paralyzed and awake,” Mios said from next door.

“I’m going to kill him,” Gavin said.

Harry yelped in surprise and jumped back, stumbling to the ground. “I’d forgotten the shifter was down here,” he mumbled to himself as he got back up.

Mios’ shackles were much longer than Gavin’s, and he wrapped his hand around the bars next to Gavin’s cell. His bright shifter eyes dilated into the darkness. “Then get out of here.”

Harry had recovered his composure and was back at the cell. He didn’t wait for Gavin to answer, jamming a key into the hole before cursing loudly and attempting another.

“I’m also releasing him.” Gavin pointed at Mios’s cell with his jaw.

Harry’s lips trembled as his gaze flashed to the shifter. “You are? But he’s a criminal.”
