She pushes up on her elbows. I ease her back down.

“We need to get you to a hospital.”

“I’m fine. I fainted. It’s not the end of the world.”

Unconvinced, I say, “You’re not winning this argument.”

Bristling mad, she won’t look at me the whole way to the hospital.

I could give a damn. I’m only worried about her and nothing will keep me from taking care of her.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

“Simona Novotny.”

I toss the five-year-old fashion magazine aside. “Yes.”

The nurse that I haven’t seen before smiles. “You’re pregnant.”

My mouth drops open but nothing comes out.

Obviously used to seeing women with my expression and soundless gaping pie holes, she says, “Okay, now that you know what has caused your fainting, you must visit your doctor immediately.”

“What? Huh?”

“Your doctor. Schedule a visit right away to begin prenatal care.”

A choked sound comes from my throat. “Wait. I have a thing.”

Her very manicured brow raises. “A thing? A penis? Yes, that’s how most pregnancies happen.”

“No! An implant.”

“Oh, birth control. It didn’t work. See your doctor immediately.”

She jerks the sheet off of me. “I’ll bring your husband in to walk you out.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Simona waves a hand at me when I ask about what the doctor said. “It’s nothing.”

Planting my feet, I give her what should be a wilting look. “I’m not moving until I know what’s up.”

Simona slides off the bed ignoring me. “It’s nothing.”

I catch her arm to make sure she’s steady. “We’re not leaving here until I know what’s up.”

“I fainted, Doctor. You know what’s up.”

I growl, “Get back in that bed.”

“They released me.”

I back her up, step by step until the backs of her legs bump the bed. “Sit.”

Snarling at me, she sits on the edge of the bed.

“Do. Not. Move.”
