“You wouldn’t…”

He grins darkly. “Without a second thought.”

I try to sit up. “Help me.”

With a giant hand, Scotch levers me up and props me against the couch. “Don’t move. Sit here and get your body adjusted to being upright.”

Ugh. I moan as my stomach tries to revolt. “I feel ill.”

He rises and disappears into the bathroom. A few seconds later, he comes back with a cool, wet towel.

I swipe it over my face for a couple of minutes. When the nausea passes, I find my voice. “We have to talk. You can’t kill Pavel until I find out what his motive was for the shooting.”

Scotch’s face turns hard. “I don’t really care what his motive was.”

“I do. It might be important.”

With murderous eyes, Scotch says, “If he’s dead, it won’t matter.”

I shake my head. “Stop being a caveman. In the intelligence world, you have to know when to off your target. When they’ve outlived their usefulness. Right now, I need him alive.”

“I’ll feel better when he’s dead.”

“I thought you saved lives. Not took them.”

He looks affronted, suddenly. “You don’t seem to understand. It wrecked me to see him shoot you. I haven’t stopped thinking about having your blood all over me for the last month. I won’t let it happen again.”

I reach for his handsome face. “You’re kind of freaking me out.”

“I’ve been wrecked, not knowing if you were okay. Not knowing if that fuckface found you again.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“It destroyed me when you ran. The Agile team has been on the hunt ever since. What spooked you so bad you had to run from everyone?”

I look away.

He catches my chin and turns me back to face him. “What spooked you?”

“The apartment was full of cameras. As soon as I found them, a man showed up at the door.”

“Full of cameras, what do you mean?”

“The bedroom, I found two and that’s without even doing a thorough search.”

“You think I took you to an apartment that I knew was bugged?”

“I didn’t know. What was I supposed to think?”

He fumbles in his pocket for his phone. A few seconds later, it’s ringing and on speaker phone. “Will, what the fuck do you have cameras in your apartment bedroom for?”

There’s a pause on the other end of the line. “Uh, yeah. Well, Mindy and I stream our sex live on the internet.”

Scotch is pissed. His color is hot, the vein in his forehead is thick and pulsing. “Where else do you have cameras?”

“A couple in the kitchen and a couple in the living room. Oh, and the security camera on the door, both inside and out.”

I can’t hold my tongue any longer. “Did Scotch know about any of that before now?”
