We lay in bed for a while. Talking and kissing and just existing. It was one of the best days already, and it wasn’t even ten a.m. I got lost in thought eventually, and Andrew studied me carefully. He finally cracked and asked if something was bothering me.

“No. Nothing at all.”

“You got so quiet. You get this far-off look when you’re really contemplative. I’m starting to recognize when you’re deep in your head.”

“How did this happen?” I asked in response.

“How’d what happen?”

“This. You and me. I feel like I’m going to wake up and find out it’s all been a really long dream.”

“No, baby, it’s very real. As for how it happened? I’m not really sure of that myself. But here we are. I’ve never felt so connected to a woman before. Ever. There’s something very special about you, Maye Louise. All I can do is hope you will let me continue to love you and honor you. From there, we’ll have to see where things take us. You know?”

“I love you too. So much, Andrew. It scares me how fast these feelings came on. But, like you said, here we are.”

“Let’s do this,” he offered, and I was his rapt audience. “We’ll take it one day at a time. We don’t have to rush things. And we’ll promise to be honest with each other, communicate through the tough stuff, and you…never wear panties again.”

“Oh my God.” I batted at his shoulder. “I thought you were being serious.”

“What?” he asked through his chuckle. “Totally serious. About all of it.” He swept my hand into his and kissed my knuckles. “I don’t want to go a day without you. How’s that for serious?”

“I like that. Because I don’t want to be without you either. The panties thing… We may have to negotiate that further.”

“We’ll see,” he said, still with a mischievous grin.

And that’s how our story started. We agreed to take it one day at a time and see where life would take us.
