Page 46 of Accepting Agatha

Let me know and love you!

XO Gray

I wrote her back and teased her about becoming way too important for her lowly brother but glad she could find time for me in her busy schedule. As I was adding the appointment to my calendar, my boss came past my desk.

“Morning,” I said with a warm smile.

“How are you today?” he asked and lingered by his office door.

“Good. Damn good, actually. Did I miss a meeting this morning? I haven’t looked at your calendar, but it’s a little later than normal for you to just be getting here.”

I wasn’t giving the man guff. I was legitimately worried I missed something on his calendar. I always asked if he needed anything prepared for his appointments, and in general, I tried to keep track of where he was if he wasn’t in the office.

“No, you didn’t miss anything. We had an unscheduled visit with the obstetrician this morning. Hannah had some spotting last night and was completely freaking out. I knew she wouldn’t calm down until she heard it from her doctor, even though I showed her two different testimonials online that said it was normal.”

“Oh, I see. And everything checked out? Baby’s good? Hannah?” The concern in my voice was heartfelt. I knew how excited my boss and his new wife were to be expecting, and it would devastate them if something happened.

“Yep!” he said with more enthusiasm. “Right as rain. Baby looks good. Growing so fast, it’s incredible.” His proud-papa smile could still be seen behind the coffee mug he lifted to his lips.

“Good to hear, man. I know Agatha is excited too,” I replied but quickly added, “Excited about her sister’s pregnancy.” The last thing I wanted to deal with was the pool of gossip sharks that worked in this building. If word got out that I got married in Vegas and didn’t remember it, I’d never be able to walk through the corridors again. If rumors started that she was also pregnant… I physically shuddered while thinking of that nightmare.

“Does Agatha want to be a mother?” my boss asked as if plucking the subject directly from my mind.

“Not one hundred percent sure, but I think so. Maybe just not anytime soon. I think we have enough to figure out without throwing an infant in the mix, you know?”

“How were things last night? I think yesterday you said she was job hunting. Anything look promising?”

I started to feel a bit protective of my wife. I appreciated that he cared about my life and my relationship, but I also had a weird feeling that he might be asking me things so he could report back to Hannah.

Thinking it best to answer in general terms, I said, “Yeah, good. Things are good. I think she mostly unpacked and worked on updating her résumé yesterday, and the real search begins today. I think…” I trailed off with uncertainty, knowing damn well I was lying and not liking the way it lodged like a sideways pill in my throat.

Once my wife and I had more time under our relationship belt and I had a better understanding of her relationship with her sisters, I would be more comfortable talking to Elijah in greater detail. At the moment, though, it felt like I would be selling her out if I said more.

“Well, I guess we should get some work done.”

“Probably a good idea.” I grinned. “Let me know if you need anything.”

“You know I will.” He laughed and closed the door between us.

After checking the time, I decided it was still too early to check in with my fierce little storm, but I could already tell I was going to have a hard time concentrating on work. Hopefully I’d get involved in some big project for the boss man and wouldn’t have time to piss, let alone daydream about my wife.

Craig, Sebastian’s assistant, invited me to have lunch, so that broke up the monotony of the day. Being cooped up in a high-rise building all day, knowing the sun was shining just beyond the thick walls, was torture. Getting out for a noontime break was exactly what my scattered brain needed.

Before I knew it, I was packing up to leave for the weekend. I tried calling Agatha twice throughout the workday and got her voicemail both times. My temper flared thinking about her blowing off her responsibilities again, but rationally, I knew I wasn’t being fair. She could be busy and couldn’t have gotten to her phone.

She wasn’t the type of girl who had her cell phone in hand all day. In fact, I never saw her goof off on social media or even text message.

What if she was feeling abandoned sitting there alone all day? It was the last thing I wanted, so I called her a third time when I got situated in my car for the commute home.

The phone rang several times before she picked up, and I truly thought I was about to hear her voicemail greeting again.

“Hello?” she said in her tempting alto. Not sure if it was possible, but her voice sounded even sexier over the phone.

“Hi. Just warming up my car for the drive home.”

There was quiet between us for a few seconds, and finally I asked, “How was your day? I tried calling a couple of times, but it went to voicemail.”

“Oh,” was her initial reply. Thankfully she decided to add more. “Sorry. My phone was dead for a bit before I realized it. I normally plug it in overnight, but I haven’t settled into a routine here yet, you know?”
