“H-H-How l-l-long have I been out?” I ask, my voice still rough as blood coats my throat.

I only know it’s blood because of the metallic taste filling my mouth.

“Don’t talk,” my dad growls out when I feel it spill over my lip and run down my chin.

My mom is instantly there and wiping the blood away after shoving Hawkeye out of the way. More tears spill as she carefully cleans me up like when we were younger. My brother and dad keep out of her way as she takes care of me. I’ve honestly missed her taking care of me, but it still doesn’t answer the question that’s playing round and round in my mind. Where’s Lyric? Why isn’t she here with my family?

“Mom, can we have a minute with Shawn?” Hawkeye asks as Ricochet enters the room and stands by the door.

If I thought Hawkeye looked rough, it’s nothing compared to how he looks. His hair is a fucking mess, clothes all disheveled and wrinkled. His cut is barely hanging on his body and there’s a large bruise circling one eye. What the fuck is going on around here.

“I’ll see you in a little bit, son. I love you,” she says, before turning to hug and kiss both of my brothers and my dad.

My dad whispers something in her ear. She nods her head and leaves the room as the men of my family move in to surround me.

“Son, you’ve got a ton of injuries. You’ve been through surgery to repair those that needed it. Including your wrist and ankle. I can’t even begin to list all of your injuries and you’ll have to wait for the doctor to learn what they are. Right now, you’re not to be talkin’. While the helmet saved your fuckin’ life, there is some damage to your throat. That’s why the few words you’ve said made you bleed. Until the doctor believes your throat has healed enough to talk again, you’re not to speak one word,” my dad orders me, his voice full of pain as he takes in my broken body from head to toe.

“Now, there’s somethin’ we gotta tell you and it’s not gonna be easy to hear. You’ve been out of it for two days between the accident and surgery. The same day that you were taken out and left for dead, somethin’ happened. Kountry and Marco went to town with Paige and Lyric. It was supposed to be Ricochet and me, but Venom came racin’ out of the clubhouse and told us to go with him. We had no clue what had happened. All we knew was that the urgency he had made us jump up and race to our bikes. Anyway, the girls stopped for ice cream sundaes. Some kind of commotion took place divertin’ Kountry’s and Marco’s attention. They turned their back for a few minutes and that’s all it took. Someone took Paige and Lyric, Shawn,” Hawkeye informs me, his voice void of any emotion. It’s not because he doesn’t care about my ol’ lady and her sister being taken. It’s because he cares too fucking much. The man refuses to show emotion if he doesn’t have to.

I try to get out of bed and I’m instantly restrained. My brothers and dad hold me down. The pain fades from my mind as I focus solely on getting out of this bed so I can go out and find Lyric. She’s the one who matters right now. Nothing else matters to me if she’s not here. My life means nothing if I can’t have my princess by my side.

“You’re not goin’ anywhere, Shawn,” my dad growls out, his voice louder than normal. “We’ve already got men plannin’ the way in the house they’re bein’ held in. Kountry and Marco might have fucked up and turned their attention from the girls, but they did get one thing right. They followed the stupid fucks who took them and know exactly where they are. Goose pulled the floor plans and they’re puttin’ a plan in place as we speak. That’s why Ricochet has the black eye. He was gonna take off and go off on his own.”

My entire body is shaking and I can’t breathe. It was hard before, but now I’m almost desperate to suck in even the smallest of breaths. My body is already lacking so much and the lack of oxygen isn’t helping the situation. I can feel my heart beating in every part of my body and the rushing of it in my ears. It’s taken over the ringing I was hearing before. My heart shatters into a million pieces with the knowledge that the love of my life is out there somewhere in the hands of those who wish to do her harm.

I sink back into the bed and try to calm myself down. Nothing works as my brothers and dad pay close attention to me. It’s not long before a ton of staff are rushing into my room because the monitor is beeping like crazy with how fast and out of whack my heart is right now. I want to break down and cry because Lyric’s been taken from me. We’ve had a few months together and it’s nowhere close enough time for us. I love her and want to spend the rest of my life with her. I want to have children and create a ton of memories that will last even after we’ve taken our last breath. I don’t want to be alone in this world when she’s not at my side. There’s no way I’ll survive without her here with me.

“We’re gonna have to ask all of you to leave,” the nurse says as the door opens again to reveal the doctor racing into my room.

“I don’t want to have to sedate you, but I will if it’s required,” the doctor says, coming to a stop at the end of my bed. “You have many injuries and you need to rest and relax if you want to get better and be discharged from the hospital. That won’t happen if you let yourself get worked up and don’t stay in this bed. Now, we’re gonna go over your injuries before we do anything else. You have a broken wrist that I had to surgically repair. The same goes for your ankle. You might always walk from now on with a limp. You’re going to have to go through extensive physical therapy after the break is healed.

“On top of that, you have road rash from your right shoulder all the way down the side of your body. The only reason your ankle and foot aren’t affected by it is because of your boots. The jeans you were wearing were shredded from you sliding across the road. There’s less road rash on your side and I have a feeling that’s because of the vest you were wearing. It helped protect you. I am only assuming you were wearing one considering everyone else entering your room has one. You have broken ribs and one of them punctured your spleen. We had to remove it. It won’t cause you to make any significant changes to your life. My main concern right now is your throat. It wasn’t crushed but there is some damage done. I can see a small amount of blood trickling from your mouth. Until it’s healed, you aren’t to speak a word. If you have something to say, you need to write it down. I believe someone was going to get you a notebook and pen to write in.

“For now, I’ll leave you to rest. If you get worked up once again, I’ll be back to sedate you and kick everyone out of your room. No one will be allowed back in until your body heals more and you are more stable. There’s still a lot of risk for something to go wrong and we need to do everything we can to make sure you don’t develop an infection or cause more damage to your body. This is your one and only warning,” the doctor informs me as she looks at me while glaring.

I’m not the best patient when it comes to being sick or injured. I know this. Turning, I look to my dad. There’s one important question I need an answer to. Without me writing anything down or trying to say a word, he knows exactly what I want to know.

“Will my son be able to ride his bike ever again?” he questions the doctor.

“I believe he will. However, it all depends on how well he heals and what happens with physical therapy. His recovery is completely up to him and he controls what happens moving forward,” the doctor answers him before making sure we don’t have any further questions.

Once the doctor leaves, I’m given antibiotics and more pain medicine through my IV. It doesn’t take long for the pain medicine to put me to sleep. I let it pull me under. Right now I can’t talk and there’s only one thing I want to be doing. I want to be out searching for my ol’ lady and it’s the last thing I can do. I’m stuck in this fucking hospital bed while leaving everyone else to get her from the assholes who have her and bring her back to me.

Waking up again, my dad, mom, and brothers are still in my room. Now Venom, Goose, and Wicked have joined them. I’m instantly alert as I wait to hear what they’ve done or if my girl is back here where she belongs. I can guarantee if she’s in the hospital or something, someone will be taking me to see her. I don’t give a fuck where she is or what she’s doing. I want to be with my princess and nothing or no one will stand in my way of making that happen.

“We don’t have them back yet. We’ve made a plan and are waitin’ for Vault and the rest of his club to get here. It won’t take them long. However, they have to handle somethin’ before they can get here. We can’t go in on our own because we have no clue how many fuckers are there. Kountry, Marco, and Otter are leavin’ now to go see if they can figure out how many guys are there. As soon as we know that, we can go in and get the girls out. Our main concern is makin’ sure we don’t do anythin’ too fast and get one, or both, of them killed,” Venom tells me, his voice a whisper because we never know when someone will enter my room.

I gesture for the paper and pen. My dad grabs it and I write the best I can with my left hand. I’m right handed and I’ll be surprised if they can read what I’m writing down.

I want the fucker that took my girl. I don’t give a fuck how long he has to wait or what’s done to get him to the cells, but I fucking want him. It’s my right to deal with him since Lyric is my ol’ lady. Bring my girl back to me and make sure she knows I love her.

Venom reads the note once my dad hands it over to him.

“He’s yours. We’ll let Lyric and Paige decide what happens to the bitch in question. She’s their blood after all. No matter what they say, we’ll make sure it happens. Kevlar, I promise you right now, we’ll bring your girl home to you and Ricochet’s home to him. You focus on healin’ and we’ll make sure to do what’s necessary to get her back to you. You have my word on that,” Venom promises me as he hands the notebook back to my dad.

I watch as my dad closes the cover and sets the notebook down on the table that rolls over my bed. Venom, Wicked, and Goose leave the room after spending about an hour with me. They’re waiting for any word from Vault or Otter. Until they hear from them, they’re going to remain here at the hospital so no one can get close to me. They aren’t taking any chances with any of us. Especially me because I can’t defend myself right now. Though, with how angry my dad is, the first person who looks at me wrong will feel his wrath. There’s no doubt in my mind about that. You don’t fuck with my dad’s kids and live to tell the tale. The only ones he’s never hurt are the girls. Though he’s trained Zoey well enough that she just takes care of the bitches herself. I’ve seen my sister fight before and she’s fucking amazing. The girl whoops ass, can handle firearms, and doesn’t back down from anything. Well, she doesn’t unless it comes to a certain asshole we all want to hurt for breaking her heart on a regular basis. Even if they’ve started to work their shit out and have kids, it doesn’t mean he’s still not an asshole. That’s not my story to tell though.

The rest of the day, I eat the shitty food that’s brought in for my meals, sleep when they give me pain medicine, and wait to hear any news about my girl. Ricochet isn’t doing much better than I am. He’s about to lose his fucking mind because he’s been told he’s not going after the girls. Hawkeye will be there with our dad. When they go to get them, Ricochet will be here with me. He’s too much of a loose cannon and has already proven more than once that he’ll leave and go off on his own to get Paige and Lyric without hesitation. They’re trying to prevent that shit. My dad and mom don’t leave my side unless they absolutely have to. The main time is when the cops come in again to question me. Yes, I can write things down. However, I don’t have a clear enough memory to be of any help to them right now. So, my parents make sure they leave me alone and that I’ll only talk to Tony once I’m ready to talk to anyone. For now, I let myself fall back into the medicine induced sleep and dream of Lyric.
