“Don’t you want kids?” Norah asks and I already know where she’s going with it. She’ll want to save Sam, our brother, from a kidless marriage.

It’s her one mission in life; to save us—her siblings—from utter horror and the decisions she wants us to make.

Summer slices a hand through the air. “Nah. I don’t want my body to get wrecked.”

An immediate coil of a smirk forms on my lips and I can feel the building tension I know is forming in my sister’s head right now.

“Well, it’s worth it,” Norah claims. “Bringing life into this world.”

“Yeah, still not for me.”

Alright, Summer, I kinda like you.

“You can always adopt.”

Summer doesn’t appear a bit interested, picking up another cucumber slice and popping it into her mouth. “Sammy and I decided no kids.”

“What?”

And here we gooooooo.

“We’ve talked about it,” Summer says. “And he wants to travel and be able to come and go as we please. It’s what we both want.”

I feel Norah glance over at me for help, but I don’t stop cutting my tomato because she’s not getting any from me. She’s already used up her strikes for me to give her an assist and if that’s what Sam really wants, good for him. I don’t care.

“Hey, baby.” I didn’t notice that the room got quiet all of a sudden, but the moment a large arm wraps around my stomach and pulls me against an even more massive chest, I know it’s Hudson.

I mean, who the hell else would it be?

And who else would cause a whole room to cease all action and speech? Maybe he’s the perfect antidote for Norah to shut up.

His face tucks into the nook of my shoulder, causing me to tense and bring it up a tad because I’m definitely not used to him being so close when he whispers in my ear, “If I don’t get away from your fuckin’ mom, I’m going to throw myself off that balcony and you’re gonna have to explain to the cops what you roped me into.”

“Is that a felony?” I whisper back, making it appear like we’re having an intimate moment and can’t stay away from each other for too long.

“Probably not.” I swear to God I feel his lips barely brush against my skin before he says, “Your dad is cool, though.”

“I’m glad you like?—”

“So, Hudson,” Summer interjects, causing my jaw to tic as I glimpse over at her. Hudson, however, does not. “How serious are you and Livy?”

Livy?

“Liv mentioned Norah planning our wedding within the next two years,” Hudson replies, and I almost scoff before I mindlessly kick at his shin because there’s no way I’d ever allow Norah to plan anything in my life that meant something to me.

“Really?” My eyes flick over to my sister who appears as stunned as I do that Hudson would even mention such a thing when he’s never going to see any of them again. I need to tell him to lay off on the damn lovey-dovey bullshit. “You’d let me do that, Liv?”

Fuck no.

“Uhhh…maybe,” I murmur as Hudson squeezes me closer and chuckles for everyone to hear.

It literally takes everything in me to not thrust my elbow into his ribs to stop fucking with the masses over here, because Norah will obsess over it.

“How old are you?” Summer feels out and my whole frame goes rigid at the reminder of how Hudson only brings it up every other sentence.

“Forty-one.”

Norah looks downright panicked at that fact and I’d feel bad, but she deserves it for attempting to clap back at me only moments ago. “She’s twenty-three.”
