“This wasn’t in my job description,” she continues to argue. “I’m supposed to handle appointments and small office necessities during the day.” Mia taps one of her temples. “I’ve read the contract a million and one times.”

“You’re driving yourself crazy,” I impart, hating the way Mia is starting to get stressed out at this new job and not even beginning to enjoy our new surroundings. Her new boss has her staying later than her stated work hours and is having her do the weirdest shit on the weekends. “Point out the contract and, if he has a problem with it, leave.”

“I can’t leave,” Mia retorts steely. “I’ve never made this much money.”

“Is it worth it, though?”

“Yes.” I give her an exasperated look because we both know it’s the opposite answer. “Listen, we both need this job.”

My brows clash. “No, we don’t. We’re doing okay, Mia. No one is asking you to be the backup plan. I’m not your dad.” Mia’s face falls and immediate regret fills my chest. “I’m not saying that I don’t need you. Only for emotional support. I don’t want you getting gray hairs over this.”

“I’ll…point out the contract and see what he says.”

“And if he’s a douchebag about it, then fuck him. There are other jobs out here. We’re not gonna sweat over this guy like that. You said he didn’t even know who The Beach Boys were.”

Mia’s lips crack into a weak smile. “Yeah, well…rich people problems, right?”

“Right.”

“Speaking of problems…” She pushes her cheek out with her tongue and I already know where she’s going with this.

“He’s not a problem.”

She shakes her head. “I wasn’t talkin’ about Hudson, we’ll save that for last. I meant your sister. You never did block her number.”

“And I never responded to her text messages either. I just left her on read.”

“Well, she’s Facebook-stalked me. If I’m in Cali that means there’s a good reason you are, too.”

“Block her.”

“I did. But she’s already asked if you’re here.”

I shrug. “Leave her ass on read. I’m not dealing with them ever again.”

“Have you talked to your dad?”

My gut slips a little bit because I have. And even though I’m telling Mia not to divulge any details on where I am to Norah, she may already know because I’ve told our father.

I wasn’t going to permit him to be worried about me just to spite my mother. Even though, if it wasn’t for him, I would have.

“I spoke to him yesterday,” I mutter. “He misses me.”

“You can always visit.”

“Only if he agrees to do it without slipping my mother in there. I won’t deal with her.”

Mia nods. “I understand. No need to put yourself in that situation.” She puts a few pretzels in her mouth, but it doesn’t stop her next question. “What’s going on with Hudson?”

I dunno.

It only opens up the things that could’ve been and the things that happened. He doesn’t text me every day but on the ones he does, I can’t help but feel hopeful that somehow things will turn around. That by some God-given miracle, it won’t be our last chance.

But it’s a pipe dream because he owns a business. And that business does very well.

“He seems to be doing alright,” I convey simply. “Mostly asks about what I’m up to and California shit.”

“So…like friends?” Mia quirks a brow and I instantly hate that question.
