Something suddenly escalates inside and the snapping and snarling turns into the sound of a full-on wild animal fight. I scream again at the sight through the open front door of the two enormous wolves rolling around on the ground in a ball of teeth and fury. “Ethan!” I cry out when I hear yelping. The fight is so tight I can’t decipher which one of them is hurt, and I start to run toward the house.

“No!” Chloe comes after me, catching my arm. “You absolutely cannot go in there, Olivia!”

“I have to get to him, Chloe! Listen to them! What if he’s hurt?”

“He’ll be okay. You have to stay here! It’s not fucking safe for you in there!”

I turn and drop to the ground in a heaving mass of tears. I feel sick to my stomach as I sob on my hands and knees, listening to the carnage behind me. I know this is all my fault. None of this would be happening if I hadn’t run away today. Things suddenly go quiet. I don’t know if it’s been five seconds or five minutes, but Chloe kneels beside me, rubbing my back.

“Liv, it’s okay. It’s over. They’ve shifted back.”

My head tries to tell me everything is okay, but my body refuses to listen as I continue to heave gasping sobs. Strong arms suddenly lift me from the ground and cradle me.

“Baby, I’m so sorry. I got here as soon as I could.”

I wrap my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest. “Ethan.” My body shakes as I sob, clinging to him.

“I’m here, baby. I’m here. You’re okay now,” he says into my hair, his voice shaking.

I loosen my hold so I can pull back to look at him. His face is bloodied and bruised. “I’m sorry, Ethan,” I whisper. “I was scared. I’m so, so sorry.” I say through tears.

“Shh. Don’t cry.” He uses his thumbs to wipe the tears from my face. “I’m here. You’re safe now.” I nod as he pulls me close, and gives me small, gentle kisses all over my face before landing on my lips. “I love you. Let’s go home.”

Ethan’s heart beats hard against my cheek as I rest against his bare chest. He wraps me up in his masculine scent, and the strength of his protective arms hold me tight. After learning Ian injected me with a drug to dilute the rejection response, Ethan insisted that Chloe call her dad to meet us at the house so I can be examined.

Arriving at Ethan’s house, he slides out of the SUV and turns to me. He stops and studies me for a moment. I shudder under his stare, having no idea what’s going through his mind right now. Things didn’t end well before I left. I only now notice he’s wearing a towel around his waist as his clothes were ruined in the fight. I give him a small smile, brushing my hand down the side of his bruised face.

He catches my wrist, kissing the back of my hand. “I’m going to take care of you,” he says. I nod in response as he helps me out of the vehicle. “Nick and I are going upstairs to get some clothes, but I’ll be right back.”

On the way into the house, Chloe comes beside me and whispers in my ear, “You might want to consider showering. You have Ian’s scent all over you.” I nod. I’d love nothing more than to wash today's filthy nightmare down the drain.

In the guest bathroom, I turn the shower on as hot as possible. Undressing, I catch my reflection in the mirror. My eyes are red and swollen, my mascara is smeared, and then I see the bruises on my arms. Tonight’s trauma rises to the surface again. I completely lose it in loud, aching sobs. The door opens behind me and my wet eyes meet his in the mirror. He comes to me, lightly grazing my arms with his hands and softly kissing each shoulder.

I pull her to me and hold her tight. I can’t imagine what she’s feeling right now after being attacked by my deranged cousin tonight. He wouldn’t have thought twice about doing unspeakable things to her. If I hadn’t arrived just in time—I can’t even think about it. I’ll completely lose my shit if I go there.

“Let me help you.” I remove my t-shirt and shorts, and take her hand. I turn the water temperature down a little so she doesn’t scald her skin. Leading her into the shower with me, I guide her under the warm water. She closes her eyes and sighs as I massage her scalp while shampooing her hair. Her body relaxes inch by inch as the warm water rinses away the suds. Moving my way down her petite frame, I massage her as I wash her back, chest, and legs. Rage courses through my body as I take care to gently wash the bruises on her arms left behind by that psychopath.

I step closer as I wash lower down her abdomen, but then I pause. “Is this okay?” I don’t want to assume she’s ready foranything sexual after what she experienced tonight. Ian may not have had the opportunity to take things all the way with her, but she and I both know he would have.

“Yes,” she says, as she places her hand on mine and guides me lower. “I need this from you, Ethan.” She gasps when my fingers reach the wet depths between her legs. She steadies herself by gripping my shoulders and leaning her forehead on my chest as I feel the tension building within her body. I lift her chin with my free hand. I need her to see that it’s me bringing her this pleasure. I need her to remember I love her. I bring her lips to mine with a desperate need, my tongue passing through them as I bring her over the edge. I release her chin and press her body to mine as she trembles, and her legs threaten to collapse through her orgasm.

Regaining her balance, she reaches for the body wash. I know she must feel the need to reciprocate, but I take her hand to stop her. “I already took a quick shower. This is all about you.” She nods and looks away, but not before I can see that her eyes are glassy with tears again. “Olivia, look at me,” I say, raising her chin. “You misunderstand. There isn’t a part of me that doesn’t want you, but right now, I just want you to relax and feel my love. Okay?” She nods with a tiny smile, and I lean down to kiss her softly.

After dressing, Chloe’s dad is waiting for us as we make our way down the stairs. “Dr. Harper.” I greet him with a handshake. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”

“Of course, Alpha. How can I be of help this evening?”

“Ian gave Olivia one of his fucked up homemade concoctions to take away the pain of the rejection response. I want to be sure he didn’t give her anything with any lasting harm. She also has some nasty bruises on her arms, if you wouldn’t mind taking a look at those too.”

“Absolutely.” Max turns his attention to Olivia, his brows lowering in concern as he sits next to her on the couch. “Olivia, how are you?”

“I’m okay. Better now.” She looks at the floor, avoiding eye contact with anyone.
