He scoffs, shaking his head. “No, you don’t. If I’m certain of anything, it’s that. I understand you need to work out your feelings, so go do that. I’ll be waiting.”

“Nick, Chloe, let’s go.” I stand and grab my purse. “Goodbye, Ethan.”

“I’ll be seeing you soon, Olivia.” He smiles as I turn to walk out of the pack house.

“Damn, the air was thick in there,” Chloe says, blowing a deep breath out as we get into the SUV that brought us here last night.

“He’s intense, that’s for sure, and persistent,” I say, thinking about everything that’s happened.

“Please, remember what I said, Liv. He’s my best friend, and he’s a good man,” Nick says.

“I promise I will, Nick, but you guys have to remember this has all just been sprung upon me. I don’t even know what it would look like if I were to be with him. How does that even work? Would I be accepted?” The look Nick and Chloe give each other suggests there’s a lot of information I still don’t have. “The first thing I need to do is sort out my feelings for Colin. I have to find out if there’s something worth fighting for with him before I can move on to dealing with Ethan.”

“We understand, Liv. It’s okay. This is a lot,” Chloe says.

“Thank you.”

Nick and Chloe drop me off at my apartment, and I go upstairs and collapse on my couch. As I’m staring at the ceiling, wishing an answer would just drop out of the sky, my phone rings, and I see Colin’s name.

“Hey,” I say, answering the phone.

“Hey, I got your text from last night. Did you drink too much?”

“A little, but I think I had a migraine or something.” Lies.

There’s a long pause before he speaks again. “Was that asshole friend of theirs with them last night?” There’s a definite edge to his voice.

“No.” More lies. I don’t see how any good can come from Colin knowing Ethan was anywhere near me last night.

“Good. I don’t like the way he looks at you. Stay away from him.”

“So, how was your night last night?” I ask, changing the subject. “I was surprised I didn’t hear from you.”

“I know, babe. I’m sorry. It was fucking exhausting, and I didn’t see your text until this morning. I have another fundraising dinner to go to tonight for my dad’s campaign.”

“Again? I was hoping we could spend the evening together.”

“That’s the good news. I was able to get two tickets tonight. How do you feel about getting dressed up for dinner, dancing, and a little schmoozing?”

“Really? That actually sounds wonderful. I’d love to go. How formal is the dress code?”

“Black tie. Is it too short notice to get a dress?”

“Nope, I’ve got something that will be perfect.”

“Great. I’ll pick you up at 6:00.”

“Sounds good.” I pause. “I love you, Colin.” My voice quivers, thinking of how I’ve behaved the last two nights.

“Love you too, babe. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Maybe I’ve been wrong about Colin. Maybe I’ve not been understanding enough. I mean, he’s doing this work for our future, and I’ve only been concerned about the attention I’ve been missing. I have to give my engagement to Colin a real chance with a positive attitude, and that starts tonight.
