“I’m doing much better. Thanks, Vanessa. Hey, I heard you had a date with Austin the other night. How did it go?”

“It was really fun. He makes me laugh,” she says with a sly grin. “I’m planning to bring him as my date tomorrow night.”

My eyes widen at her admission. “I’m not sure if you know, Vanessa, but Ethan kind of hates him. Is that really a good idea?” Maybe she’s not aware of what happened.

“Oh, I know,” she says with a smirk. “That’s part of what makes him so much fun.”

“Vanessa.” Chloe laughs, shaking her head and rolling her eyes.

“Ethan is just being overprotective because he caught Austin checking out Olivia. Look at her. She’s gorgeous. Any man would check her out. It’s not like he’s my mate.” Vanessa shrugs.

“Did Austin tell you what happened?” I ask.

“Yeah, he told me.”

“Vanessa, Ethan will be pissed if you show up with Austin,” I warn her.

“Do you think the Luna ceremony is the best time to be trying to get on your brother’s nerves?” Chloe asks.

“It’s not all about Ethan. I have fun with Austin. Plus, he’s hot and I need a date.”

Chloe and I look at each other. I’m at a loss for words, and Chloe just shrugs her shoulders and laughs. Ethan and Nick join us, handing us each a glass of wine.

“Hey, could I talk to you privately for a minute?” I ask, taking his arm.

“Sure.” He lowers his eyebrows, taking me to a private hallway. “What’s going on?”

“I feel like I should give you fair warning about something that’s going to happen tomorrow.”

“That sounds ominous. What is it?”

“I don’t want you to get all worked up about this, but I just found out Vanessa is bringing Austin as her date to the Luna ceremony tomorrow. I thought I should say something so you won’t be surprised.”

His face reddens and his fists clench. “What the actual fuck is she thinking? I can’t believe he’s a part of my security team. I should have fired him for his disrespect when I had the chance. I still could. I could forbid her from bringing him.”

“Ethan, it’s like your mom says, he’s young. You know, the more you act like it bothers you, the more Vanessa will continue to bring him around. Don’t let it get to you.”

“Easier said than done, and you know that, Liv.”

“I assume since he’s Vanessa’s date, he won’t be one of the security staff on the team tomorrow night.”

“Fuck, no. I would never trust him with your safety. Only the most experienced staff will be working tomorrow. He better not fucking show up here tonight.”

“She didn’t say anything about a date tonight. I didn’t mean to upset you,” I say, touching his arm. “Should I not have said anything?”

“No, I’m glad you did. I wouldn’t have appreciated the surprise, and I don’t want us to keep things from each other.”

“Okay, good. That’s how I feel too.”

He takes my hand, and we walk back toward Nick and Chloe. “I need to speak with Nick again. I’ll be right back.” He kisses me on the cheek. “Nick, I need another word, please.”

“What’s wrong with him? Shouldn’t he be happy right now?” Chloe asks.

“It’s my fault. I warned him that Vanessa is bringing Austin as her date tomorrow. I didn’t want him to be surprised. I just hope it doesn’t become a problem during the ceremony.”

“It won’t. These guys usually take care of things behind the scenes. It’s probably best you didn’t let her surprise him with it.”

“Yeah, that’s what he says too, but now he’s in a mood.”
