Almost seven years went by but Dad’s condition didn’t improve one bit.

The accident that occurred all those years ago left him paralyzed from the waist down. His spinal cord was also affected, resulting in him having difficulty forming proper speech.

His being alive was a constant source of disappointment for Callum but I thanked the heavens every day for letting my dad stay with me. Dad was the only reason I got out of bed most days.

“Hey there,” a familiar voice sounded in my ear.

The sound startled me so badly, the glass slipped from my hands and fell into the sink in front of me. I cringed as the tumbler shattered from the sudden impact.

“So clumsy of you, Luce,” Callum’s voice was filled with amused chuckles as he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against his chest.

I squirmed, hating his lover-like embrace.

“That was for Dad,” I said, doing my best to keep an even tone. “It’s time for his meal, so I’m going to have to start over again.”

“You’re such a sweet person,” he crooned, skimming his nose along the side of my neck.

I held my breath, my body stiffening.

Callum’s behavior filled me with disgust but I was too scared of him to protest. These past seven years showed me my brother’s true monstrous nature.

John, Rafael, and Danny never came home again. I asked around at school and in our neighborhood, but no one had seen them past that night when everything changed.

Callum never wavered from what he told me.

I kept hoping they’d turn up eventually but after seven years of waiting, I was forced to acknowledge the truth. My brother killed the three young men I’d fallen in love with. That had to be the only reason they never came to see me again.

John, Rafael, and Danny were guilty of nothing. Yet, they paid the price of being my friends.

Part of me believed Callum was responsible for the accident that incapacitated Dad and chained him to the bed and a wheelchair. My brother showed no pity for our poor father. He even went as far as complaining that Dad was costing him money he could better invest elsewhere.

Callum stepped up to fill Dad’s position. From then on, it didn’t take him long to steal all control over Dad’s company and assets. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed like a planned conspiracy.

“Could you hand me that towel, please?” I said, desperately looking for an excuse to get Callum off me.

He obliged. Unlocking his arms, he moved to the table to grab me a towel.

“Thanks,” I said as he handed me a roll of kitchen towels. “Would you like some coffee?”

“I came to speak to you about something,” he said, his expression turning grim. “How about we meet up in Dad’s room? He should probably know about it too.”

“What are you talking about?”

He booped my nose with a manic grin I’d come to fear. “If you’re curious, hurry up and join me in Dad’s bedroom.” With a chuckle, he turned around and walked out of the kitchen.

My body sagged against the kitchen counter. Dealing with Callum in a calm, poised manner always drained me.

His possessive touches and flirty innuendos never stopped hitting a nerve. I could also see how much he struggled to hold himself back when I resisted him.

I was lucky he hadn’t completely lost his mind and taken what he hungered for. His love wasn’t that of a brother’s. His psychotic mind was only obsessed with possessing me and making sure I was fully dependent on him.

He hadn’t even allowed me to go to school these past years. He insisted homeschooling was a safer option. It came as no surprise when he employed only female teachers for me.

Even though I had a high school diploma, there was no way I could ever leave Dad under his care and go to college. Even if I decided to be selfish and go, Callum would never allow it in the first place.

He insisted I took online courses because a college campus was a dangerous and unsafe place for a sweet, innocent girl like me.

It was suffocating to stay under Callum’s rule. Abandoning Dad was also out of question. Eventually, I was forced to stay home and become my father’s caregiver.
